Canon shutters the EOS 5D Mark II, makes Mark III man of the house

Canon shutters the EOS 5D Mark II, wheel continues to turn

Given the advent of the EOS 5D Mark III, it's hardly a surprise to see that the Mark II has been quietly moved to Canon's retired list. The full-frame DSLR was famous for its HD video prowess and was quickly adopted by Hollywood, where it was used to film an entire episode of House back in 2010. While the spirit of the 5D lives on in the latest revision, the old dog most definitely deserves a toast 'round the fire.

Some scattershot final thoughts before I fold up the laptop for the year.

Thanks, Will, for helping me wrap my mind around The Mumford Perplex. Listening to the band?s bombastic skiffle hymns, I was struck again by how in this century, Brits, traditionally pop?s irony specialists, have become torchbearers for solemn anthemic rock. There?s Radiohead, Coldplay, Keane, Muse. And now, the Mumfords, who pin their quivering hearts to their capos like none since The Kingston Trio. My own taste in British folk revivalists runs more to Fairport Convention, so I want to mention that Richard Thompson, a man who has never released a bad record in a career than spans nearly 50 years, put out another fine one in 2012, the cast album for his ?folk oratorio? Cabaret of Souls. It?s worth tracking down.

Speaking of graybeards: The veteran who impressed me most in 2012 most was one I?d never heard before. I?m talking about the rapper Ka, age 40. (That?s 175 or so in hip-hop years, no matter what Jay-Z says.) Ka is a late bloomer. He began his career as a member of the ?90s rap crew Natural Elements but has admitted to interviewers that he wasn?t a very good MC. His second solo album, Grief Pedigree, is the fruit of patience, persistence, practice. It?s a complete auteurist feat; Ka produced every song and directed his own videos, some of the best I saw all year. The album is impressively of-a-piece, sustaining a mood as dank and ominous as the lamplit backstreets in the videos. The music is calm but menacing, and Ka?s flow is unhurried; he?s less a rapper than a hardboiled raconteur, a teller of tales that require no flashiness or ornamentation.

The result is a ?90s-style New York thug-rap album, totally deglamorized?an O.G. looking back at the hustle with a headshake, and without illusions. ?I admit, not from an environment that let a child flourish/ In the street, slim physique, wild courage/ Five deep, trying to eat, looking malnourished,? he raps in ?No Downtime.? ?Decisions? ponders the moral ambiguities of thugging, unfolding in a series of a) or b) questions. Occasionally, the rapper turns his attention to other matters, like sex. ?Nut?? he asks. ?Or reposition?? Ka?a man who likes to take his time?chooses b).

While I?m on the subject of old-timers: Have you guys heard the latest Prince songs? (Jason, if you?re looking for funky antidote to EDM, you could do worse than ?Extraloveable.?) There?s been much talk about Springsteen?s indefatigability, but let?s take a moment to marvel at the sylphine agelessness of the Purple One. In fact, I?ve been thinking about Prince a lot recently: For a forthcoming Slate piece, I?ve been listening (or trying to listen) to everything the guy has recorded. It?s been an astonishing experience?a reminder of Prince?s rampant genius, and of the wisdom of musical elders, generally. As critics, we spend so much time focused on the new, the now, the next. But pop has still not caught up with Prince. People are trying, though: cf. Miguel, Jai Paul, and Usher?s Looking 4 Myself bonus track ?Say the Words,? a For You-era Prince pastiche par excellence. Maybe these tyros will follow Prince back to the future, reviving the deep groove? Or will the catalyst be the resurgent D?Angelo, more of a Prince acolyte than ever with his newfound guitar chops?

Jason, I loved your tribute to Donna Summer and the scorn you heaped on ?bottle-serviced dance pop.? I have a question, though. Wasn?t glamour and aspirationalism a huge part of the disco story? And wasn?t Summer herself one of American pop?s great Europhiles, a woman who fled her pious Boston upbringing for Berlin?who came into her own musically when she went jet-set, teaming with a suave Italian record producer? (Seems to me ?Love To Love You Baby? and ?I Feel Love? gave soul and funk a kind of fizzy Eurotrash makeover.) I wonder, therefore, if EDM-propelled dance-pop isn?t actually a lot like disco: If the vogue for four-on-the-floor club beats is a kind of cyclical turning away from gutbucket African-American sound?in this case, what Sasha Frere-Jones called ?hip-hop?s blues-based swing??in favor of music that?s more upscale, with a fancy continental pedigree? Is Rihanna Donna?s daughter, after all?

I?m running out of time, so I?ll wind down with a few quick words about country.

Country is the most conservative and hidebound of all pop genres. It?s also the most challenging music I listen to: In a time of intense polarization, it pulls this blue-state-Brooklyn-secular-humanist-Jewish Obama voter into the lives of Americans who fit none of those categories. This can be painful. I love the heft and sweep of Trace Adkins? Great Recession anthem ?Tough People Do? and appreciate its large-hearted populism. But in this year of birtherism and the 47 percent, I couldn?t help but be wary hearing Adkins sing ?Tough people pull themselves up by the bootstraps.? And in the wake the Newtown tragedy, it?s even more difficult to stick with Adkins, a card-carrying member of country?s NRA brigade.

And yet: Conservatism, in the form of home-and-hearth subject matter, is one of country?s great attractions. To return to Lindsay?s first post: the flipside of #YOLO is #WADS, We?ll All Die Someday?a verity that hits you hard as you move into middle age, watch your love ones pass on, and have kids of your own. It's one of the reasons I love country so much: More than other music, it carries that #WADS realism, valorizing middle-class lives?marriages, kids, divorces, parents? deaths?by dramatizing them, in gory detail, and with wit. I vote differently than Trace Adkins; I like guns a lot less than Miranda Lambert and Justin Moore. But my day-to-day life is about loving and fretting over my kid; it?s about trying to throw some breakfast down his gullet and get him to school on time. Country records talk about that stuff. Other pop records just don?t.

Also, like Ann, I?m a song person, and if there?s one thing country musicians know how to do, it?s write them thangs. Enter Kacey Musgraves. I said my piece about Musgraves? amazing ?Merry Go Round? earlier this year. Since then I?ve heard a bunch more Musgraves music?some that?s out there on the Internet, some that I got after begging her record company. I can tell you this: She?s the real damn deal.

Musgraves can reel off witty genre numbers like an old Nashville hand. Her best songs, though, show mastery of Music Row form while giving a wide berth to its clich?s and pieties. Her music is pretty but tough; it has a leathery hide. She writes in a voice?young, female, white, Southern, working-class?you won?t hear elsewhere in pop: certainly not from country?s fairy princess, Taylor Swift, nor from Lindsay?s faves Katie Crutchfield or Grimes, nor from Fiona or Regina or any other (sorry, Ann) NPR-touted singer-songwriter. Musgraves is a millennial (she?s 24), but the young women in her songs face lives of sharply circumscribed possibilities?no #YOLO. They?re single, for the time being, but marriage (a bad one, almost certainly) is waiting around the corner, along with a few kids and a crappy wage-slave job. Listen to ?Blowin? Smoke,? a song about (among other things) waiting tables in Las Vegas and nicotine addiction. Here?s Musgraves? narrator, chatting and smoking with fellow waitresses after a shift:

Well, Janey got divorced again
Her ex-husband?s in the pen
For two to five or five to 10
Or longer
And Brenda?s trading smokes for cake
Still hasn?t lost that baby weight
And that?s baby?s ?bout to graduate
From college

I just flick an ash
Into the tray
And tell them both
It?ll be OK
But we?re just blowin? smoke

Songs like that make Mugraves my big One To Watch for 2013. So I?ll put a little bookmark here, in the hope that we?ll all meet again?same time, same corner banquette, next year. Bottle service optional.

G Data AntiVirus 2013 review | Privacy PC

Posted by David Balaban on December 24, 2012

G Data AntiVirus 2013 is a streamlined and highly effective solution for everyday security provision.

Download

Not only does the motto ?Security Made in Germany? being currently used in G Data product marketing imply location aspect of the company profile, it also translates to undoubted reliability. G Data Software AG is a German (Bochum-based) security software vendor with over 25 years of background in the IT protection field, which makes it one of the industry pioneers both in Europe and worldwide. The areas covered include private user and enterprise security, with effective solutions delivering the defenses that have consistently won recognition by international evaluation institutions.

This review is intended to provide a thorough analysis of G Data AntiVirus 2013 product which was made to address private users? security challenges with smart protection instruments conforming to the present-day malware combating trends. Equipped with unique two-engine detection system, cloud technology and system monitoring tools, the software proved to do a great job spotting and safely eliminating viruses, Trojans, rootkits, and the not-yet catalogued threats. Exceeding the regular antivirus strategy, this solution also enhances a number of online security niches such as web surfing, email and e-banking protection. Furthermore, the G Data team by no means neglected the system performance impact nuance, adding custom security / performance balance opportunities and optimization tools including idle scan which gets triggered only when the system is not being used.

We scrutinized G Data AntiVirus 2013 from several essential angles to get a complete product profile that should suffice for the average user to make up their mind.

System Requirements

Operating System:

  • Windows XP SP2 and above (32-bit) / Windows Vista (32-bit and 64-bit) / Windows 7 (32-bit and 64-bit) / Windows 8 (32-bit and 64-bit)

Hardware:

  • 1 GB RAM or higher for Windows Vista / Windows 7
  • 512 MB RAM or higher for Windows XP

Other Requirements:

  • Internet connection for signature and product updates

?

Usability

Product setup went generally smooth and fast. Instead of sticking to the stub installer algorithm which is prevalent across the board, the vendor chose to follow the bulk file download, so the longest part of the entire process is the time required for downloading about 350 MB of data. Installation proper is therefore not lengthy, requesting the user to select full or custom setup; pick the opt-in Malware-Feedback that implies agreeing to participate in the G Data Malware Information Initiative; and decide whether automatic signature updates are to be performed hourly. Everything else is pretty usual, including the choice between 30-day trial and commercial version, so no particular skills are required to complete the procedure.

The first impression from the user interface was kind of dubious. On the one hand, it looks a little over-simplistic and old-fashioned ? at least compared with some of the competitor products we tested recently. This might be explained by the fact the 2013 versions of the latter were made to fit into the Windows 8 style. Since G Data AntiVirus 2013 does not fully support all new features of this OS version for the time being (e.g. the new Windows 8 interface), that might be the thing affecting its external manifestation.

On the other hand, the interface is tailored to have everything it takes to manage the program?s functionality and be duly informed about protection status and security related events ? apparently, simplicity is not always a bad thing. The left-hand pane includes licensing information and one really helpful component called ?CPU load? which displays memory usage by G Data and System in separate icons. Security status displayed on the GUI?s home section is another useful feature; moreover, the related issues can be fixed in a single click ? that?s what the ?Correct? button is there for. Program settings and auxiliary options (accessing help, logs and product information, creating rescue CD) are the only two buttons on the top. The main features are concentrated below: those are virus protection, virus signatures, web protection and email check. Digging deeper into the settings didn?t turn out to be a more puzzling experience than exploring the main interface: you mostly get options to select or de-select ? as easy as that.

Now, let?s assign G Data AntiVirus 2013 some tasks and see what it?s like in action. First thing we did was trigger signature update. This process implies updating two engines (A and B), as well as the Whitelist. As long as the Internet connection is active, it goes okay, with no lags or other issues whatsoever.

Next, we ran system scan which sticks to the following sequence: system areas, memory and startup, rootkit check, and virus check proper. The process went generally fine until it reached the ?Virus check? part: it turned out way lengthier than we could have possibly anticipated, with only 30% progress reached in 45 minutes. At this point, it?s fair to remark that we kept the default performance parameters unaltered, while there is an option of customizing security / performance correlation ? in the latter case, if the optimal balance is configured the scan times get reasonable. And yet, it?s kind of frustrating to run into an issue like that with the recommended parameters selected.

Overall system productivity remained virtually unaffected throughout the test, except perhaps the average of 4 seconds added to the boot time. With all the unquestionable strong points, G Data AntiVirus 2013 might obviously do a better job in terms of the scan times. Furthermore, in our humble opinion, GUI upgrade for full Windows 8 compatibility would do the vendor a favor by attracting a broader user base.

Features

In addition to smart virus protection based on the use of two engines, G Data AntiVirus 2013 accommodates some Internet security features to keep you safe when visiting sites, exchanging emails, and banking online. This added value is flattering because it means you get more than just an antivirus. Now, some details.

  • AntiVirus Monitor is the core protection feature integrated in this product. Composed of two mutually-enhancing engines, this component serves as a powerful tool for filtering out viruses, rootkits, Trojans, adware, dialers, worms, and other types of malware. Owing to behavior monitoring capability, G Data is constantly on the lookout for suspicious applications running on your machine or attempting to access it. The innovative mix of signature detection and behavior watch makes this software highly sensitive to zero-days, i.e. new threats.
  • Security / Performance optimization is about the choices you are entitled to do in terms of tuning your preferred level of protection and system productivity. The default values give you maximum security and medium speed but, as the usability test above showed, that might be a burden for your machine and a test for your nerves, especially when you run full system scan. So the vendor kindly empowers the user to define this balance: for instance, you can manually deactivate one of the engines, or set a custom AntiVirus Monitor mode other than the default ?Check read & write access?.
  • Being equipped with the Web Cloud feature, G Data AntiVirus 2013 gets you closer to the safe side of the Internet by applying sophisticated whitelisting mechanism to block suspicious websites and the ones containing obviously malicious components such as corrupt payloads. Furthermore, the utility prevents phishing attacks and monitors instant messenger activity.
  • Employing cutting-edge Mail Cloud techniques, G Data virtually nullifies contamination probability via the email channel which is frequently used by scammers these days. The kernel component of this feature is called the OutbreakShield whose objective is to ensure instant protection against email malware outbreaks.
  • The main idea of BankGuard is to ensure adequate protection against Banking Trojans designed to steal sensitive financial details and transmit this data to their authors.
  • Idle Scan is intended to maintain normal system productivity when you are actively using your computer. In other words, this feature determines when the system is idle and runs automatic scans in these intervals. This functionality can be disabled at any time, just make sure you define regular scheduling in that case.
  • Fingerprinting is another remarkable feature aimed at optimizing performance during scans. This means G Data AntiVirus 2013 can memorize every little detail of the tasks it performed on your machine earlier, and intelligently single out some patterns in order to reduce its effort next time without sacrificing efficiency.
  • The product is configured by default to perform Hourly Updates of its virus signatures, so you get the privilege of enjoying minty-fresh protection from new malware that is added to the database.
  • By creating Boot CD you can clean a malware-infested system without the viruses preventing you. This method enables scanning the PC and eliminating infections prior to Windows launch, making the process smooth, unimpeded, and trouble-free.

Efficiency

Detecting the bad stuff and weeding it out for good are the things G Data is obviously proficient at. Protection thoroughness is reinforced by hourly signature updates, innovative antivirus approach, and a set of online security features comprising web surfing, email and online banking defense.

Looking at independent test results, it?s clear that this software?s main virtue is exceptionally reliable virus detection ? we believe this is largely due to the vendor?s tactic of combining two third-party engines: from Avast! and Bitdefender.

G Data AntiVirus 2013 is on Virus Bulletin?s VB100 list. Furthermore, according to a number of recent tests conducted by the worldwide-known AV-Comparatives, G Data showed 99.9% detection rate, which is the best result out of the set of 15 evaluated products, and hence got Advanced award ? could have been Advanced+ if it weren?t for false alarms that were spotted. In AV-Comparatives? latest Real World Protection Test, the software being reviewed turns out to be one of the 3 best products out of the 21 utilities tested.

The above facts leave no room for doubt with regard to detection accuracy and cleaning capability hard-coded into G Data AntiVirus 2013. In terms of efficiency, it is one of the industry leaders, delivering truly premium protection to private users. The only thing to keep in mind here is the possible nuisance of receiving false positives on normal applications ? well, we guess that?s the flip side of the nearly perfect detection.

Help & Support

This product provides built-in support options accessible through the ?More? drop-down menu in the top right-hand part of its GUI. Additionally, users can fill out G Data service form or browse the top FAQs on their website. For urgent help, G Data EmergencyLine is available ? that?s the vendor?s phone support. We didn?t find online chat with Support representative, which is not critical considering high responsiveness of their help team, yet might be a good idea to implement.

+/- (Pros/Cons)

  • Easy to install and use
  • High protection scores
  • Intelligent performance optimization
  • Online security features (web surfing, email, e-banking protection)
  • Trial version available
  • Reasonable cost
  • Somewhat old-fashioned interface
  • False positives
  • Lengthy full scan with default settings unaltered

Bottom line

G Data AntiVirus 2013 is a great example of how two different detection engines can successfully coexist within one solution and complement each other. Nearly immaculate protection is hence the business card of this software. Moreover, the extent of online security supplied by G Data definitely surpasses the Internet protection scope competing antivirus products offer. When it comes to usability, things aren?t as serene though because you may run into long scan times, and it might take some configuring to adjust the optimal performance mode. This particular issue set aside, G Data AntiVirus 2013 is a streamlined and highly effective solution for everyday security provision.

Audits of businesses for illegal immigrants rising

SEATTLE (AP) ? U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement reached its highest number yet of companies audited for illegal immigrants on their payrolls this past fiscal year.

Audits of employer I-9 forms increased from 250 in fiscal year 2007 to more than 3,000 in 2012. From fiscal years 2009 to 2012, the total amount of fines grew to nearly $13 million from $1 million. The number of company managers arrested has increased to 238, according to data provided by ICE.

The investigations of companies have been one of the pillars of President Barack Obama's immigration policy.

When Obama recently spoke about addressing immigration reform in his second term, he said any measure should contain penalties for companies that purposely hire illegal immigrants. It's not a new stand, but one he will likely highlight as his administration launches efforts to revamp the nation's immigration system.

"Our goal is compliance and deterrence," said Brad Bench, special agent in charge at ICE's Seattle office. "The majority of the companies we do audits on end up with no fines at all, but again it's part of the deterrence method. If companies know we're out there, looking across the board, they're more likely to bring themselves into compliance."

While the administration has used those numbers to bolster their record on immigration enforcement, advocates say the audits have pushed workers further underground by causing mass layoffs and disrupted business practices.

When the ICE audit letter arrived at Belco Forest Products, management wasn't entirely surprised. Two nearby businesses in Shelton, a small timber town on a bay off Washington state's Puget Sound, had already been investigated.

But the 2010 inquiry became a months-long process that cost the timber company experienced workers and money. It was fined $17,700 for technicalities on their record keeping.

"What I don't like is the roll of the dice," said Belco's chief financial officer Tom Behrens. "Why do some companies get audited and some don't? Either everyone gets audited or nobody does. Level the playing field."

Belco was one of 339 companies fined in fiscal year 2011 and one of thousands audited that year.

Employers are required to have their workers fill out an I-9 form that declares them authorized to work in the country. Currently, an employer needs only to verify that identifying documents look real.

The audits, part of a $138 million worksite enforcement effort, rely on ICE officers scouring over payroll records to find names that don't match Social Security numbers and other identification databases.

The audits "don't make any sense before a legalization program," said Daniel Costa, an immigration policy analyst at the Economic Policy Institute, a Washington, D.C., think tank. "You're leaving the whole thing up to an employer's eyesight and subjective judgment, that's the failure of the law. There's no verification at all. Then you have is the government making a subjective judgment about subjective judgment."

An AP review of audits that resulted in fines in fiscal year 2011 shows that the federal government is fining industries across the country reliant on manual labor and that historically have hired immigrants. The data provides a glimpse into the results of a process affecting thousands of companies and thousands of workers nationwide.

Over the years, ICE has switched back-and-forth between making names of the companies fined public or not. Lately, ICE has emphasized its criminal investigations of managers, such as a Dunkin' Donuts manager in Maine sentenced to home arrest for knowingly hiring illegal immigrants or a manager of an Illinois hiring firm who got 18 months in prison.

Many employers also wonder how ICE picks the companies it probes.

"Geography is not a factor. The size of the company is not a factor. And the industry it's in is not a factor. We can audit any company anywhere of any size," Bench said. He added ICE auditors follow leads from the public, other employers, employees and do perform some random audits.

But ICE auditors hit ethnic stores, restaurants, bakeries, manufacturing companies, construction, food packaging, janitorial services, catering, dairies and farms. The aviation branch of corporate giant GE, franchises of sandwich shop Subway and a subsidiary of food product company Heinz were among some of the companies with national name recognition. GE was fined $2,000.

In fiscal year 2011, the most recent year reviewed by AP, the median fine was $11,000. The state with the most workplaces fined was Texas with 63, followed by New Jersey with 37.

The lowest fine was $90 to a Massachusetts fishing company. The highest fine was $394,944 to an employment agency in Minneapolis, according to the data released to AP through a public records request.

A Subway spokesman said the company advises franchise owners to follow the law. A Heinz spokesman declined comment.

Bench didn't have specifics on what percentage of fines come from companies having illegal immigrants on their payroll, as opposed to technical paperwork fines in recent years.

Julie Wood, a former deputy director at ICE who now runs a consulting firm, said she'd like to see the burden of proving the legality of a company's workforce go from the employer to the government. She'd like to see a type of program, such as E-Verify, be implemented with the I-9 employment form. E-Verify is a voluntary and free program for private employers that checks a workers eligibility.

"At the end of the day, the fine is the least of it," she said. "Usually the company will spend more on legal fees. But it is a huge headache for the company to lose workers."

Wood said she'd like to see the agency go after more criminal charges and focus on companies that treat worker inhumanely.

Germany plans to clone the perfect Christmas tree, break Charlie Brown's heart

We've seen Christmas trees built out of spare car parts, discarded SCSI drives, OLED panels, and quadrocopter stacked boxes, but Germany? Their taking the old tannenbaum back to its roots -- and tweaking its genetic code. With the aide of a government grant, scientists in Germany are trying to develop a method of tree cloning suited to Nordmann Fir. The native pine is popular for yuletide trimmings, but can be difficult to grow -- as much as 40 percent of trees grown for the season wind up the wrong shade of green or have their growth stunted by frost. Plant biologists hope to have a healthy stock of cloned trees ready by 2016, assuming nothing goes terribly wrong. Perfectly cultivated clones or not, we still prefer 'ol Chuck Brown's charming twig.

Top 10 Internet Obstacles You Must Overcome for a Successful E ...

It takes a lot of hard work to be successful in an E-commerce business, you need a strategy a creative team and a lot of innovative ideas to overcome any potential obstacles and outfox your competitors.

A quick search for internet providers in my area on this site will show you what is available where you live.?Furthermore, listed below are the top 10 obstacles you will face in an E-commerce business.

    1-Security
The Internet is not a secure environment and the whole idea of e-commerce is to provide a huge data bank that everyone around the world can access, but due to breach of security, hackers can fiddle with important data. Any website that seems insecure will automatically put off visitors who may turn to alternates.

Every E-commerce business should select a hosting service very carefully, the platform must be encrypted and password protected or else someone could just hack into the database and steal vital information.

The server must also have backup so that all the data you store online is not lost in case the system crashes.

    2-Dynamic Environment
The internet is a very dynamic environment that is constantly changing at a rapid pace. If you are unable to cope with the latest trends and technologies then your business will be left behind, so a wise idea is to implement a strategy that guides your business step by step.

    3-SEO
In the highly competitive online industry, a business just can?t survive if customers do not know about its existence. Online search engines are unlikely to place a new business? website at the top of the search results, so what you need to do is create awareness through search engine optimization techniques.

SEO consultants can help drive business growth and increase sales.

    4-User Interface
Any successful online business has a good user interface; the design should be user friendly and divided into categories. If customers can?t find what they are looking for, they will be frustrated and will move on elsewhere.

So make sure that your website is simple to operate with a search option as well. Category-wise, you could divide your products by price, gender, and so on.

    5-Logistics
Small businesses can?t keep every single item in their catalog; instead, they only have the best selling items. However, when an order for a product that is unavailable comes up, you are left in disarray and will possibly lose the sale if you don?t act fast.

Modern E-commerce businesses have a system through which they can automate the process of order fulfillment. If the product is unavailable then the order is directly sent to the wholesaler who then delivers the product immediately.

6-Bringing the Product Closer to the Consumer

One major disadvantage of E-commerce is that a customer can?t touch or feel the product, so it is a lot more difficult to sell anything as compared to personal selling.

However, you can overcome this problem by bringing the customer as close to the product as possible by using images and video on your website to show consumers what they will be buying. Take pictures from multiple angles and provide as much detail as possible.

    7-Lack of Information

Since there is no sales staff in an E-commerce business, you are unable to provide full detailed information to customers. For example: A consumer might not specifically know what type of memory card he should use in the camera he just bought, however there is a solution to this problem.

Your E-commerce platform should have further categories that show consumers add-ons or any other related product categories so that your customers are well informed.

    8-Language Barrier
A lot of E-commerce businesses operate on a large scale, but are unable to generate high sales despite their high market reach; this is mainly because of the language barrier.

English is one of the most widely spoken languages in the world, but in order to expand your business across the globe you must offer more than one language on your website or else you could miss out on some fantastic business opportunities.

    9-Geographical Barrier
If you?re operating from a small city, you might never be able to fulfill large orders from across the globe because there are differences in time zones.

Currency is probably the biggest geographical barrier. A customer in Brazil will want to know the value of the product in terms of ?reais?, if he faces any difficulty then he might not buy the product.

Your E-commerce website should have currency converter option, along with metric or imperial size measurements depending on the requirements.

    10- Checkout Process
A lot of customers abandon their purchase after reaching the checkout phase. People feel that this stage is too complex and misleading for them to continue.

Companies often do not offer complete details of the purchase or even a summary to help consumers. A solution to this problem is to have an expert design your website and make sure that you cover these minute details as they can hurt your chances of making a sale.

    Conclusion

You can achieve success in your E-commerce business if you follow these simple guidelines and avoid mistakes.?A quick search for internet providers in my area on this site will show you what is available where you live.

Rheinmetall 50kW laser weapon aces latest test, pew-pews a 3-inch ballistic target

Rheinmetall 50kW laser weapon aces latest test, pewpews a 3inch ballistic target

In the "sure wish we had a video" category, aptly-monikered defense contractor Rheinmetall has run a highly successful test of its 50kW high-energy laser weapon. It works by hunting down incoming targets using a so-called Skyguard radar system, then locking in with an optical scanner before firing multiple, superimposed beams for extra energy. During the Swiss trials, the German-made HEL cannon managed to cut through a 15mm steel girder from over 3,200 feet away and knock down several drones diving at over 110 mph. Most impressively, the laser succeeded in dipatching an 82mm steel projectile in flight, showing the viability of beam-based weapons against potential mortar attacks. Rheinmetall has quintupled the power in just the last year, and plans to ramp up the juice to 60kW in 2013 trials, saying "nothing stands in the way" of a future 100kW system. Of course if that doesn't work out, it could always start up a death metal band.

Four planets in 'habitable zones' spotted within spitting distance of Earth

Astronomers say they used a new statistical technique to find four possible super-Earths orbiting in the habitable zone of two stars within 22 light-years of Earth, Gliese 667C and tau Ceti.

    By Pete Spotts,?Staff writer / December 19, 2012

This diagram shows an artist's rendering comparing our own solar system to Kepler-22, a star system containing the first 'habitable zone' planet discovered by NASA's Kepler mission. The 'habitable zone' is a region where under the right conditions, liquid water can form stable pools on the surface.

Astronomers say they have uncovered evidence for what could be four super-Earth planets orbiting within the habitable zones of two stars within 22 light-years of Earth.

    ' + google_ads[0].line2 + '
    ' + google_ads[0].line3 + '

    '; } else if (google_ads.length > 1) { ad_unit += ''; } } document.getElementById("ad_unit").innerHTML += ad_unit; google_adnum += google_ads.length; return; } var google_adnum = 0; google_ad_client = "pub-6743622525202572"; google_ad_output = 'js'; google_max_num_ads = '1'; google_feedback = "on"; google_ad_type = "text"; google_adtest = "on"; google_image_size = '230x105'; google_skip = '0'; // -->

Three of those candidate planets are among a tightly packed clutch of five that orbit Gliese 667C, part of a triple-star system 22 light-years away in the constellation Scorpius. The other possible planet is one of five orbiting tau Ceti, a sun-like star 12 light-years away in the constellation Cetus.

Taken together, the detections not only add to accumulating evidence that planets look to be more common than stars ? and that planets in habitable zones could be more common than previously thought, some of researchers reporting the finds say.

The finds also illustrate the power of improved statistical tools to boldly uncover candidate planets where no planet had been found before.

The evidence for these candidate planets requires independent confirmation, the researchers caution.?Still, the tools represent "a real breakthrough," says Steven Vogt, an astronomer at the University of California at Santa Cruz and a member of the team reporting the results for tau Ceti. The approach the team took leaves only about one chance in 3 million that the detections could herald something other than a planet.

Since the mid-1990s, astronomers have bagged more than 850 extra-solar planets. The ultimate goal is to find rocky planets with Earth-like masses orbiting within their stars' habitable zones ? a region where under the right conditions, liquid water can form stable pools on the surface. Liquid water is considered an essential ingredient for organic life.

Different groups of astronomers had aimed three telescopes for various lengths of time at tau Ceti and found nothing. Led by Mikko Tuomi at the University of Hertfordshire in Britain, the team reporting this latest analysis applied relatively new statistical tools to the combined data from these telescopes.

The result: "Five planets came out: boom, boom, boom, boom, boom ... as clear as a bell," Dr. Vogt says.

Tau Ceti has about 78 percent of our own sun's mass, but its composition is quite similar, Dr. Tuomi's team reports. Its candidate planets range from 2 to 6.6 times Earth's mass.

The innermost object orbits the star once every 14 days, while the outermost takes 642 days to make its circuit. The fourth planet from the star, with a 168-day orbit, travels well within a zone where liquid water could remain stable on the planet's surface, the team estimates. However, the results don't speak directly to what the planets are made of.?

A similar story has played out for Philip Gregory, an astronomer at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver. Previous researchers had found two planets orbiting Gliese 667C, a red dwarf with 31 percent of the sun's mass. Using a broadly similar statistical approach, he reports detecting the initial two, plus three more planets. Three of the five fall within the star's habitable zone, he estimates.

Nissan pulls plug on cycling sponsorship

    • By Andrew Hood
    • Published Dec. 20, 2012
    • Updated 20 hours ago

    Latest Headlines

LEON, Spain (VN) ? Nissan is pulling the plug on its high-profile sponsorship effective immediately and its name will not appear on RadioShack jerseys next season.

Officials from the North American division of the carmaker confirmed the news to VeloNews on Thursday. The news first broke earlier today in a report in the Luxembourg newspaper Le Quotidien.

Nissan officials would not elaborate on why it decided to abruptly end its deal with the Luxembourg-registered team owned by construction tycoon Flavio Becca, but confirmed to VeloNews it would no longer be associated with the team.

?Nissan and the management team of RadioShack-Nissan-Trek cycling have reached an agreement that provides for Nissan?s immediate withdrawal as a sponsor of the team, while enabling the team to continue competing in the upcoming 2013 season,? said David P. Reuter, vice president of corporate communications. ?Nissan wishes the riders, team management, and professional cycling well in future endeavors.?

It is believed the car manufacturer will honor its financial agreement through the term of its contract, set to conclude at the end of 2013.

That means that the squad that is home to Andy Schleck, Chris Horner and Fabian Cancellara will still have the money to pay salaries going into next season.

Nissan?s name, however, will not appear on jerseys or bikes and the cars will not be used as official vehicles for the team.

The news is a blow for the team and comes on the heels of troublesome year for the squad after the merger of RadioShack and Leopard-Trek that former team rider Jakob Fulgsang called ?a disaster.?

Former team manager Johan Bruyneel left the team in October under growing pressure for his involvement in the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency investigation into doping practices on teams he managed from the late 1990s to 2010.

Bruyneel is challenging a lifetime ban, all but assuring a string of negative headlines if the case hits arbitration next year.

Star rider Fr?nk Schleck is also facing a possible racing ban after testing positive for a banned diuretic at this year?s Tour de France. Luxembourg officials heard more evidence in the case yesterday and sources say a decision could come in January.

Whether those issues helped nudge Nissan out of the sport remains unknown. Company officials refused to expand on reasons behind its hasty exit.

Nissan?s arrival as a full co-sponsor in 2012 was seen as a boon not only for the team, but a larger confirmation for cycling. The team gradually increased its involvement in cycling over the last handful of years, also backing the Amgen Tour of California and USA Pro Challenge.

As one of the world?s largest car manufacturers, Nissan brought high-profile exposure and corporate credibility to the table.

In a press release on Nissan?s website dated February 2012, company officials were enthusiastic about growing the brand?s presence in cycling.

The company cited the two million fans watching the Tour of California and stated that cycling is a ?good fit for a corporation that has consistently demonstrated its interest in environmental issues, along with health and fitness.?

That enthusiasm quickly soured and Nissan is second major sponsor to leave the sport in the past few months.

Rabobank also walked away from its long-running sponsorship of its namesake Dutch team in the wake of the USADA case against former seven-time Tour de France winner Lance Armstrong.

Like Nissan, it agreed to pay its financial commitments and the team will ride as ?Blanco? next season while management searches out new backers.

Foreign fighters in Syria might trigger conflicts in neighboring nations

BRUSSELS/GENEVA (Reuters) - Fighters from around the world have filtered into Syria to join a civil war that has split along sectarian lines, increasingly pitting the ruling Alawite community against the majority Sunni Muslims, U.N. human rights investigators said on Thursday.

The deepened sectarian divisions in Syria may diminish prospects for any post-conflict reconciliation even if President Bashar al-Assad is toppled. And the influx of foreign fighters raises the risk of the war spilling into neighboring countries, riven by the same sectarian fault lines that cut through Syria.

"As battles between government forces and anti-government armed groups approach the end of their second year, the conflict has become overtly sectarian in nature," the investigators led by Brazilian expert Paulo Pinheiro said in an updated report.

As a result, they said, more civilians were seeking to arm themselves in the conflict, which began 21 months ago with street demonstrations demanding democratic reform and evolved into an armed insurgency bent on toppling Assad.

"What we found in the last few months is that the minorities that tried to stay away from the conflict have begun arming themselves to protect themselves," Karen Abuzayd, a member of the group, told a news conference in Brussels.

Syrian government forces had increasingly resorted to aerial bombardments, including shelling of hospitals, and evidence suggests that such attacks are "disproportionate", the report said. The conduct of hostilities by both sides is "increasingly in breach of international law", it added.

"Feeling threatened and under attack, ethnic and religious minority groups have increasingly aligned themselves with parties to the conflict, deepening sectarian divides."

    FIGHTERS FROM 29 COUNTRIES

Most of the "foreign fighters" slipping into Syria to join rebel groups, or fight independently alongside them, are Sunnis from other countries in the Middle East and North Africa, the U.N. investigators found, reporting on their findings after their latest interviews conducted in the region.

"They come from all over, Europe and America, and especially the neighbouring countries," said Abuzayd, adding that names from 29 states had been recorded so far.

The report covers the period between September 28 and December 16, and will be part of a final document to be prepared in March.

It said the Lebanese Shi'ite Hezbollah had confirmed that group members were in Syria fighting on behalf of Assad.

Hezbollah has previously denied sending members to fight alongside Syrian government forces.

But Hezbollah held a series of funerals two months ago for Fighters killed "performing their jihadist duties" and leader Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah suggested they had been fighting in areas along the poorly defined Lebanon-Syria border.

The U.N. report also cited reports of Iraqi Shi'ites coming to fight and said Iran, a close ally of Assad, confirmed in September that its Revolutionary Guards were in Syria providing assistance. Tehran has denied military involvement in Syria.

Investigators also said human rights violations were being committed on all sides of the conflict and members of government and anti-government groups alike would be listed for possible referral to the International Criminal Court.

"As the conflict drags on, the parties have become ever more violent and unpredictable, which has led to their conduct increasingly being in breach of international law," the report said.

All sides, investigators added, were failing to "distinguish targets" and using civilian property for military purposes.

The harsh reality of reporting on young lives lost

A casket carrying the body of shooting victim Jessica Rekos, 6, is brought out after her funeral. (Photo by John??

NEWTOWN, Conn. - Small talk with new acquaintances inevitably evolves to, "what's the worst story you ever covered?"

The question makes me cringe. I enjoy what I do, but 20 years of reporting on crime and national news has put me face-to-face with unforgettable tragedies.

Being on the scene at Hurricane Katrina, Columbine, Virginia Tech and the Aurora, Colorado movie massacre undoubtedly made me pause and seek perspective in life.

But what happened at Sandy Hook Elementary has been different. Not to take away anything from those other horrors, but first-graders slaughtered by some sicko is a gut-wrenching story even for the most jaded journalist.

My ?worst? stories have always been and will always be tragedies involving kids.

Kids like 11-year-old Jason Boner, who I witnessed get sucked down a storm drain during a 1994 Dallas rainstorm. I can still hear his mother crying his name as she ran to the scene.

Or 9-year old Amber Hagerman, whose kidnapping and murder inspired the Amber Alert system.

A surprise snow was falling the night coroners carried Amber's body from a cold Texas creek in 1996. She looked peaceful in her blue casket days later, but her neck, slashed and scarred, served as an evil reminder of why she was being laid to rest.

[RELATED: How to help the families]

Now it?s the scenes from Newtown that will forever nag me.

Front-door funeral wreaths signifying a death in the family may be a thing of the past, but in Newtown silver state patrol cars served the same purpose this weekend. An officer was parked in the driveways of every child gunned down by Adam Lanza.

?There?re 20 of us,? a trooper told me with tears in his eyes.

Then on Monday, I watched as a grief-stricken woman dropped off a little red and black dress with morticians at Honan Funeral Home in Newtown.

?That should have been her Christmas dress,? my own mother said when she called to check on me.

[RELATED: Photos of the Newtown shooting victims]

While my colleagues have concentrated on covering the victims of this tragedy, I?ve spent most of my time here reporting on the shooter, Adam Lanza. The who, what, where and how. Sadly, we still don't know the most important ... why.

    (Jason Sickles/Yahoo News)

My stories prompted a few angry emails from readers.

?You get off on violence so much, come on over - I'll kick your ass for ya!,? one fella wrote me.

How absurd. I do what I do to inform, not glamorize a gunman. It?s something I discussed with a former FBI profiler this week.

?If this case doesn?t turn us around and make us think about what makes us tick and how these things happen nothing will,? said Mary Ellen O?Toole, an expert on psychopathic criminals. ?We have to understand so we can take strides forward.?

The kind of strides that will keep me from worrying about Jasper, Oliver, Patrick, Peyton and Trinity, my nieces and nephews who are the same ages of the Sandy Hook victims.

Eight-year-old Peyton recently discovered how to text from her iTouch and is keeping my wife?s phone buzzing. The evening before the Newtown nightmare, I sent her a playful message:

?It?s Uncle Jason. Why don?t you text me?!?! ??

Her innocent reply: ?But I love you.?

I love you too, kiddo, and I?m coming home to give you a big hug.

"I have a wide-range of food experience - working in the restaurant industry on both sides of the house, later in the wine industry, and finally traveling/tasting my way around the world. Whether you agree or disagree, you can always count on my unbiased opinion. I don't take free meals, and the restaurants don't know when, or if, I am coming."
