Sony confirms Android 4.3 upgrade plans

Sony

Xperia Z,?ZL,?ZR, Tablet Z,?SP and Z Ultra to get 4.3 upgrade; some 4.1 devices could jump straight to 4.3

Sony is the first Android OEM to commit to device updates to Android 4.3, less than a day after Google unveiled the new version of Android in San Francisco. The Japanese company says it can confirm that the?Xperia Z, Xperia ZL, Xperia ZR, Xperia Tablet Z, Xperia SP and Xperia Z Ultra will all get upgrades to Android 4.3, though no specific update timetable is offered.

In addition, Sony says it's looking at upgrading some of its Android 4.1 devices directly to 4.3, leapfrogging 4.2 entirely. (It wouldn't be the first we've heard of a manufacturer possibly jumping straight from 4.1 to 4.3.) Again, Sony's not committing to any timeframes, but says it'll share more details when it's able.

Meanwhile, the Android 4.2 updates will continue rolling out for existing Sony devices. The manufacturer says the Xperia ZR and Tablet Z will start seeing 4.2 push out from early August.

Facebook offers the dummy's guide to mobile advertising

By Alexei Oreskovic and Jennifer Saba

SAN FRANCISCO/NEW YORK (Reuters) - Facebook Inc's mobile advertising success offers a ray of hope for Internet companies trying to make money within the confines of the smartphone's small screen.

The social network's 75 percent surge in mobile ad revenue in a span of just three months not only doused skepticism on Wall Street and Madison Avenue about Facebook's business prospects, some say it could serve as a how-to guide for other Web companies navigating a world where the phone and tablet have fast become the screens of choice.

Facebook's "Newsfeed" ads, which inject marketing messages straight into a user's content stream and are tailored for mobile devices, were the stars behind the social network's stunning numbers on Wednesday.

"You're going to see a lot of companies transitioning and trying to emulate this model because it's working so well. That's why last night was a true watershed moment," said Ben Schachter, an analyst at Macquarie Research.

Internet company executives have long been concerned that mobile advertising is inherently less lucrative than traditional desktop PC advertising, due to the smartphone's limited screen size and possible consumer resistance to a flood of ads on their devices.

Companies from Google Inc and Yahoo Inc to upstarts such as Snapchat are searching for the right formula to monetize mobile services. While Google has developed a mobile ad business generating an estimated $10 billion a year in revenue, it remains much smaller and less lucrative than Google's desktop search advertising. Analysts expect Google to generate $60 billion in annual revenue this year.

That wholesale exploration of "native ads" - or marketing messages intended to blend with a users' personal content, rather than stand out as an ad - has met with varying success.

Twitter, which pioneered the concept of the in-stream ad even before Facebook, may also be well-positioned to benefit from mobile ads. "Sponsored" messages now pop up abruptly in the middle of streams of tweets, but analysts say the frequency is much lower on Facebook newsfeeds.

More than half of the privately held company's revenue will come from mobile ads this year, reckons Clark Fredricksen, at industry research firm eMarketer.

Some are just getting into the game. This week, LinkedIn Corp, the network for business professionals, rolled out in-stream ads on mobile and PC versions of its service. Yahoo has experimented with similar types of ads, and acquired blogging hub Tumblr for $1.1 billion in May, in part to jumpstart efforts at developing new formats.

But it's Facebook, which a year ago had zero mobile revenue, that has most aggressively promoted its mobile advertising business to Madison Avenue - with seeming success.

"Compared to other companies, nobody has come right out and said mobile is our sole focus now," said Angela Steele, CEO of Ansible, part of advertising holding company IPG. "Facebook put all their eggs in one basket."

FOLLOWING SUIT

One longstanding question has been how much tolerance consumers have for ads that disrupt their stream of content. Facebook said it has steadily increased the number of ads in the news stream without noticing a drop in user satisfaction.

Facebook Chief Executive Mark Zuckerberg said on Wednesday that, on average, ads now account for 5 percent or one in 20 "stories" in the newsfeed. That ratio could now provide a baseline for calculating success, prompting other Web companies to raise the frequency of ads in their streams.

"It wouldn't surprise me if other companies would look at that and follow suit," said Ansible's Steele.

Hussein Fazal, the CEO of AdParlor, which manages advertising campaigns on Facebook, guesses that the social network must have gradually opened the spigot, gauging user reaction and adjusting the stream all the while.

They seemed to have hit on the right formula, but it's one that differs across platforms, he said.

"The reason Facebook can do it is, the rest of the content that's there is so engaging that you don't mind one out of every 20 ads," he said. "If you have a newsfeed that's not so engaging, and you keep seeing ads, then it doesn't work."

Plus, the more ads in the stream, the less users will click on them, which can dampen ad prices, he added.

Facebook's seeming success on mobile devices contrasts with Google's more gradual improvement in that area. The No. 1 Internet search engine has gradually managed to narrow declines in its overall ad rates from the mobile effect, but last quarter they reversed and went down again, disappointing investors.

Google has avoided news stream ads entirely in its Google+ social network. Instead, its mix of mobile search ads, video ads and innovative formats such as "click-to-call" have delivered what RBC Capital Markets analyst Mark Mahaney estimates is a $10 billion annualized run rate for its mobile business, about four times as much as Facebook.

But mobile has driven down the average cost of Google ads, and some industry watchers consider the transition a long-term threat to the search giant. But other analysts say recent changes to the way it sells ads to marketers, blurring the distinction between the mobile and PC, could help bolster rates.

"The advantage Facebook had is that it's monetization on desktop was pretty immature to begin with," says Mahaney.

Google, by contrast, "had a very mature, sophisticated monetization, and then along comes mobile."

Watch Bill Nye Explain How We Could Stop an Asteroid with Laser Bees

Because Bill Nye explains the world better than even experiencing it yourself, here's our childhood maestro of science explaining how we could possibly stop an asteroid from destroying Earth. Giant bombs, huge rockets and even freaking lasers probably can't stop it. And even if they could stop it, we might not be able to build them. So, uh, yeah.

Cassini Saturn photo: A view of Earth from 900 million miles away

Cassini Saturn photo:?The images, from probes orbiting Mercury and Saturn, show Earth as a pale blue dot.

By Elizabeth Barber,?Contributor / July 23, 2013

In this image from July 19th, the wide-angle camera on NASA's Cassini spacecraft has captured Saturn's rings and our planet Earth, plus its moon, in the same frame.

NASA has released color and black-and-white images taken from its Cassini and MESSENGER probes orbiting Saturn and Mercury. Those images show Earth as just a dot, lost in the solar system?s gaping emptiness.

In the photographs from the Cassini spacecraft, Earth is seen from about 900 million miles afield, a bright blue dot just under Saturn?s mammoth yellow-brown rings.?The moon appears like a small star, a humble white stipple in the surrounding darkness.?

And in the MESSENGER photos, Earth is pictured in a black-and-white image at a distance of about 61 million miles, from Mercury?s orbit. In that photo, Earth looks like a sparkling star ? a bulb of white light quietly announcing itself from space. Together, the Earth and the moon are less than a pixel in the photograph, but have been overexposed to bloom with light.

The Cassini photo, taken in mid-June, marked the first time that Earthlings were told in advance that a picture was going to be taken, ending a rude tradition of snapping candid shots of Earth. NASA scientists had asked us to turn out for picture day ? not that anyone really had a choice ? venturing out in streets and front laws with a smile and a wave for the far-flung camera.

Pictures of Earth from space are difficult to take, since scientists must wait to take the shot until a roster of factors align. For the Cassini probe to snap Earth, Saturn had to completely eclipse the sun, blocking out unwanted sunlight that could ruin Cassini's sensitive detectors. The photo also had to be taken when the orbits of Saturn, the Earth, and Cassini lined up perfectly to make dot-like Earth visible.

Still, those rare pictures of a small planet have loomed large in global consciousness. In 1990, Voyager 1 took from out past Neptune the "Pale Blue Dot" image of Earth. That image is considered the first space image to communicate the haplessness of Earth when viewed with some ? or a lot ? of perspective. There, all the planet?s continents and oceans and borders receded into blue. All its dramas and stories and memories faded into a dot. All its people disappeared.

And yet, all those invisible people had managed to send an object out to the furthest reaches of our solar system ? and how to take a photograph with it.

In several weeks, NASA will release a mosaic photo of Saturn's rings that is taking time to assemble.?

Eight years after their first research partnership, Nanyang Technological University (NTU) and Rolls-Royce are taking their research alliance to greater heights with a new multi-million dollar collaboration.

The centrepiece is the Rolls-Royce@NTU Corporate Lab, which was launched today at a joint investment of S$75 million by NTU, Rolls-Royce and the National Research Foundation, Prime Minister's Office, Singapore.

This unique research tie-up will kick start 32 new projects over the next five years, tripling the existing number of projects between Rolls-Royce and NTU.

The Rolls-Royce@NTU Corporate Lab is the first of its kind in the world with a university, focusing on three core research areas Electrical Power and Control Systems, Manufacturing and Repair Technologies and Computational Engineering.

It is also the first lab to be supported under the National Research Foundation's newly launched Corp Lab @ University scheme.

Research in these fields are aimed at inventing more efficient and reliable energy delivery systems, developing innovative manufacturing technologies to complement more robust power systems, and extracting information from equipment and processes so that operators can make timely and informed business critical decisions.

NTU President Professor Bertil Andersson said this latest joint lab with Rolls-Royce is a milestone for NTU, although the two have been ramping up their alliance over the years since their first engagement in 2005.

"It is fantastic that NTU, the fastest-rising university in the world's top 50, is strengthening our partnership with Rolls-Royce, one of the world's leading power systems companies," says Prof Andersson.

"This lab will combine the strengths of both organisations NTU's cutting-edge research in engineering and science plus our world-class professors, students, and infrastructure, with the strong industrial capability of Rolls-Royce' leading engineering and services activities for civilian and military customers in over 80 countries."

The lab will work closely with the Energy Research Institute @ NTU (ERI@N) as well as the university's four engineering schools: the School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering; the School of Materials Science and Engineering; the School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering; and the School of Computer Engineering.

"Rolls-Royce has a long and proud history of delivering engineering excellence and innovation to support our expanding global customer base especially in the Asia Pacific region's aerospace, marine and energy markets," said Professor Ric Parker, Director of Research and Technology, Rolls-Royce.

"We are deeply committed to supporting Singapore's innovation and education goals and extend the Group's world-class skills, technology and expertise to this unique initiative. NTU and Rolls-Royce share a common vision and awareness of the need to support research and development in fields closely aligned to Singapore's core strengths. The Rolls-Royce@NTU Corporate Lab is a practical step toward this goal, and we are very pleased to partner with the National Research Foundation and NTU in this exciting and unique opportunity."

As a testament to Singapore's reputation as a research and development hub in Asia, this new collaboration also aims to build Singapore's human capital in the aerospace and maritime sectors, in addition to offering new job opportunities in research.

The lab will have a team of more than 300 top-level talent comprising research staff and technical experts. This includes Rolls-Royce staff and NTU faculty, as well as the training of up to 70 researchers, 40 PhD and 25 Master's students, in addition to a number of NTU undergraduates.

NTU is no stranger to Rolls-Royce, having forged a close partnership with the leading global power systems company in the last 8 years, when research collaborations were initiated in the domains of power generation, power electronics and control systems.

In 2009, the Rolls-Royce Advanced Technology Centre (ATC) was set up at NTU, and which is now recognised as a key source of innovation within Rolls-Royce. The same year, NTU embarked on a five-year research partnership with Rolls-Royce to conduct research in the areas of manufacturing process technology and power electronics.

In September 2011, NTU launched the joint Master of Science degree programme in Project Management with the University of Manchester (UOM) along with Rolls-Royce, which aims at developing core competency skills in project management.

Baseball players deplore doping rather than defending them

Protective no more, baseball players are downright disgusted these days with doping.

Now they are demanding even stiffer suspensions for those caught cheating.

?It?s a new generation of athletes that are standing up,? Travis Tygart, chief executive of the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency, said Tuesday. ?The culture?s been flipped on its head.?

More Related to this Story

When Ryan Braun accepted a season-ending 65-game suspension Monday rather than fight Major League Baseball over evidence he used performance-enhancing drugs, fellow players appeared tired of those who cast shadows on the sport.

?They?re lying to the fans,? Los Angeles Angels pitcher C.J. Wilson said. ?They?re lying to their teammates. They?re lying to their GMs, their owners, and they?re going to get caught.?

Skip Schumaker of the Los Angeles Dodgers said Braun, the 2011 NL MVP for the Milwaukee Brewers, let him down.

?Watching him talk right now makes me sick,? Schumaker said. ?I have an autographed Braun jersey in my baseball room that I?ll be taking down. I don?t want my son identifying what I?ve worked so hard to get to and work so hard to have ? I don?t want him comparing Braun to me.?

Matt Kemp of the Los Angeles Dodgers, who finished second to Braun in the 2011 MVP vote, said the Milwaukee slugger should be stripped of the honour.

?We had conversations, and I considered him a friend,? Kemp said. ?I don?t think anybody likes to be lied to, and I feel like a lot of people have felt betrayed.?

Braun tested positive for elevated testosterone in October 2011 but successfully overturned a 50-game penalty when an arbitrator ruled the outfielder?s urine sample was handled improperly. Braun loudly proclaimed his innocence then.

?I thought this whole thing has been despicable on his part,? Detroit pitcher Max Scherzer said. ?When he did get caught, he never came clean. He tried to question the ability of the collector when he was caught red-handed. So that?s why the whole Braun situation, there is so much player outrage toward him.?

New York Yankees manager Joe Girardi said Braun was guilty.

?You don?t accept a deal unless you?re guilty,? he said.

?It?s another black eye for our game. I know this game is very resilient, and there?s been a lot of scandals over the years, but you get tired of it,? Girardi added.

He may soon face his own problem ? with a star slugger.

More than a dozen players have been targeted by MLB in its probe of the closed anti-aging clinic Biogenesis of America, including three-time AL MVP Alex Rodriguez of the Yankees.

The next step will be for MLB to inform the union of additional players it intends to penalize, which could happen as early as a meeting on Thursday, a person familiar with the probe said, speaking on condition of anonymity because no statements were authorized.

New York expects A-Rod could face a much harsher penalty than the one Braun agreed to, a second person familiar with the case said, also speaking on condition of anonymity because no statements were authorized.

The Yankees anticipate Rodriguez could be accused of using PEDs over multiple seasons, of recruiting other athletes for the clinic, of attempting to obstruct MLB?s investigation, and of not being truthful with MLB in the past when he discussed his relationship with Dr. Anthony Galea, who pleaded guilty two years go to a U.S. federal charge of bringing unapproved drugs from Canada into the United States.

Players have the right to have an arbitrator decide whether discipline meets the ?just cause? standard in baseball?s drug agreement. Braun?s decision not to fight led others to conclude a grievance would have been futile.

?Obviously the evidence was overwhelming, and it must have been a mountain of it,? Tygart said.

?I think it speaks volumes for the generation of athletes today who don?t want to be forced to make the same mistakes of the past generation who felt compelled in order to compete to use these dangerous drugs,? he said. ?I think absolutely that?s a huge sign that the culture has turned in a huge direction from where it was in the late ?90s and early 2000s.?

Despite Braun?s suspension, however, Kemp has no shot at claiming the MVP trophy. The Baseball Writers? Association of America has said repeatedly that it will not revisit any of its award votes.

?The decision was already made. He won it,? said Jack O?Connell, the BBWAA?s secretary-treasurer.

Commissioner Bud Selig said in March he wants even tougher penalties, and union head Michael Weiner said players will consider toughened rules for 2014.

While Braun?s 65-game penalty is 15 games longer than the current standard for a first offence, Scherzer thinks it?s insufficient.

?The Brewers are unlikely to make the playoffs. He misses 2013, and they are set for 2014,? he said. ?For someone that cheated the game as badly as he did it just doesn?t seem right.?

Asian stocks mostly gain after Japan election

BEIJING (AP) ? Chinese stocks fell but other Asian markets edged up Monday after Japan's ruling party won a majority in parliament's upper house and a mandate to push ahead economic reforms.

Oil stayed above $108 a barrel amid signs of an improving U.S. economy.

Tokyo's Nikkei 225 gained 0.1 percent to 14,609.02 following Sunday's election. The outcome ? a victory for Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, whose "Abenomics" program aimed at sparking an economic revival ? was widely expected and already had been factored into trading strategies.

"The results of Sunday's Upper House elections are probably the best outcome for the equity markets, especially if, as seems likely, the yen resumes its gradual decline," said Marcel Thieliant of Capital Economics in a report.

Markets in Singapore, Seoul, Taipei and Sydney rose in light trading.

China and Hong Kong were the regional exceptions. China's benchmark Shanghai Composite Index was off 0.5 percent at 1,981.34 after sentiment was dampened by last week's data showing economic growth slowed for a second quarter. Hong Kong's Hang Seng shed 0.2 percent to 21,326.13.

There was little impact from Beijing's lifting Friday of controls on interest banks can charge on loans.

The move, one element of long-promised financial reforms, could mean lower rates for more creditworthy borrowers and might help to boost growth. But analysts say the immediate impact will be limited because a cap on interest paid on deposits remains in place, suppressing returns to savers and depressing consumer spending.

"Rate liberalization alone will not be able to address all the problems that China faces today," said Credit Suisse economists Dong Tao and Weishen Deng in a report. "The core issue today is that private investment interest weakened significantly."

Elsewhere, Taiwan's Taiex added 0.6 percent to 8,109.16. Sydney's S&P/ASX 200 rose 0.5 percent to 4,997.30. India's Sensex added 0.2 percent to 20,192.33. Benchmarks in Manila and New Zealand also rose.

On Friday, U.S. stock prices were hurt by a slump in technology issues including Microsoft, Hewlett-Packard and IBM. The Standard & Poor's 500 gained 0.2 percent while the Dow Jones Industrial average was almost unchanged.

Japan's stagnant economy is showing signs of perking up, helped by the aggressive monetary and fiscal stimulus that Abe has implemented since he took office in late December. Stocks have surged, business confidence is improving and the weaker yen has eased pressure on exporters.

Long-term growth requires changes to boost competitiveness and cope with Japan's rapidly graying population and soaring national debt.

Abe faces a decision this fall on whether to follow through on raising the sales tax next April from 5 percent to 8 percent, a move needed to shore up Japan's public finances, but one that many worry will derail the recovery.

By contrast, China's slowdown is deepening, prompting some analysts to say Beijing might need to launch a new stimulus to prevent a plunge in growth.

Economic growth fell to a two-decade low of 7.5 percent in the three months ending in June from 7.7 percent the previous quarter. Retail sales and investment growth also weakened, while surveys showed June manufacturing activity contracted.

New communist leaders who are in their first year in power are trying to shift the basis of China's growth from exports and investment to more self-sustaining domestic consumption. They say slower growth is acceptable but some analysts warn an accelerating downturn might force them to temporarily reverse course and step up government spending.

In currency markets, the dollar declined to 99.99 yen from the previous trading session's 100.6 yen. The euro rose to $1.3155 from $1.3141.

Benchmark crude gained 34 cents to $108.21 a barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange.

Computer Science

?CS101 teaches the essential ideas of Computer Science for a zero-prior-experience audience. Computers can appear very complicated, but in reality, computers work within just a few, simple patterns. CS101 demystifies and brings those patterns to life, which is useful for anyone using computers today.
In CS101, students play and experiment with short bits of "computer code" to bring to life to the power and limitations of computers. Everything works within the browser, so there is no extra software to download or install. CS101 also provides a general background on computers today: what is a computer, what is hardware, what is software, what is the internet. No previous experience is required other than the ability to use a web browser.

Huge leaks reveal Apple will release budget iPhone and iPhone 5S will have a fingerprint scanner

TWO huge online leaks predict Apple will equip its flagship iPhone 5S with a FINGERPRINT scanner when it's released later this year.

They have also predicted the Californian tech giant will offer consumers a "budget iPhone" option at a cheaper price than its top-of-the-range model.

    iPhone 5S leak

Packaged up ... iPhones on factory line

The scanning technology would only feature on the 5S, and is likely to be used to access the device, eliminating the need for a PIN number.

Pictures of the eagerly-anticipated handsets ? which are already thought to be in production ? have been let slip by the seperate online sources.

    iPhone 5S leak

Budget iPhone ... plastic casing, left, and a modified iPhone 5 for reference

One set of snaps shows fresh silver 5S handsets and parts on the factory production line.

The other set claims to show details of the budget model, which is made of colourful plastic and is the same size as the previous iPhone 5. No other details are yet known about its specifications.

    Budget iPhone leak

Plastic ... bottom end of budget iPhone shells

Apple hasn?t confirmed or denied either of the leaks, instead sticking to it?s long-standing policy of keeping quiet until the day of release.

But information that comes out around the time of production tends to be reliable because more potential leakers have access to the phones in the factory.

    Budget iPhone leak

Simple ... budget handsets side by side

Other details released say the 5S device will have a huge 12 megapixel camera, and be made from a smooth, moulded ?liquidmetal? aluminium case.

    Budget iPhone leak

    Close-up ... camera at corner

It is also thought the device could get Near Field Communication (NFC) ? a feature enabling users to share information by bumping their phones togther.

    Budget iPhone leak

Basic construction ... Budget iPhone and components

The technology for NFC has been around for some time, but has never featured on an iPhone before.

The 5S could also have a faster processor than the iPhone 5 and 2GB RAM.

    Budget iPhone leak

    iNcredible ... leaked image

The screen for the 5S will stay the same size ? at 4 inches ? but will now feature technology called IGZO which will help conserve battery life, if the rumours are to be believed.

Thousands take to streets to protest Trayvon Martin verdict

By Edward Upright and Zachary Faginson

NEW YORK/MIAMI (Reuters) - Demonstrators took to the streets in dozens of U.S. cities on Saturday to vent their anger over the acquittal in Florida of the man who shot unarmed black teenager Trayvon Martin to death and to call for federal charges in the racially tinged case.

Hundreds marched in the summer heat to rally at federal courthouses in Miami, Chicago, Los Angeles and other cities, demanding "justice for Trayvon" and an end to racial profiling that they said was at the heart of the case.

The rallies came one week after a Seminole County, Florida, jury returned verdicts finding 29-year-old George Zimmerman not guilty of second-degree murder and manslaughter in the February 2012 death of Martin.

Critics contend Zimmerman, who is white and Hispanic, wrongly suspected Martin, 17, of being a criminal because he was black. The neighborhood watch volunteer called police to report Martin, then left his car with a loaded handgun concealed in his waistband.

A fight ensued in which Zimmerman suffered a bloody nose and head injuries before he shot Martin once in the heart.

In New York, scene of one of the largest rallies, roughly 2,000 protesters, some carrying "Boycott Florida" signs or wearing T-shirts with Martin's picture, were led by an emotional Sybrina Fulton, the slain teenager's mother.

"Trayvon was a child," she said. "I think sometimes it gets lost in the shuffle because as I sat in the courtroom, it made me think they were talking about another man. And it wasn't. It was a child."

Fulton burst into tears as members of the crowd shouted: "We love you!"

    JAY Z, BEYONCE

She was joined at the event by hip-hop mogul Jay Z and his wife, pop star Beyonce, along with New York City mayoral candidate Christine Quinn and civil rights activist Al Sharpton.

Sharpton, who helped organize the nationwide rallies and who led the crowd in repeated chants of "no justice, no peace" and "I am Trayvon Martin," said the celebrity couple didn't want to speak at the rally but wanted to stand with Martin's family.

Civil rights leaders had voiced hopes for peaceful protests after outbreaks of violence that earlier this week led to arrests in Los Angeles and the San Francisco Bay area.

Sharpton has said he hopes continued public pressure will force the U.S. Department of Justice to bring federal civil rights charges against Zimmerman.

Federal prosecutors say they are investigating whether Zimmerman violated civil rights laws. But lawyers have said they think new charges are unlikely.

At the White House on Friday, President Barack Obama sided with those who say the shooting need not have happened, expressing sympathy to the Martin family. He said the case was properly handled by the court in Florida but questioned "stand your ground" laws that have been adopted in 30 states.

Although Florida's stand your ground law was not cited by Zimmerman's defense team, the jury was instructed that under the state's 2005 statute he had the right to use deadly force if he reasonably believed it was necessary to do so in self-defense.

Following the main event in New York some 800 people made a boisterous but peaceful procession over the Brooklyn Bridge, pausing outside the federal courthouse in Brooklyn before moving on.

    'NO JUSTICE, NO PEACE'

Elsewhere, about 2,000 people endured a downpour in Atlanta to hear speakers talk of the need for justice for Trayvon Martin and other black youths.

The Trayvon Martin Prayer Vigil and Rally, in downtown, began with chants of "no justice, no peace," and "Trayvon, Trayvon, Trayvon" before speakers urged the crowd to register to vote and to seek repeal of Georgia's stand your ground law.

Martin Luther King III urged the audience to go to Washington, D.C., on August 24 for the 50th anniversary of the March on Washington and his father's famous "I Have a Dream" speech. "It's marching time, ladies and gentlemen," he said.

At least several people in the crowd were treated for heat-related illness after fainting on the sweltering day.

At a rally in Miami, Martin's father, Tracy, told supporters that after the acquittal he has "come to realize George Zimmerman wasn't on trial - Trayvon was on trial."

In Los Angeles, about 500 people converged on the federal courthouse in Los Angeles under gray skies, toting signs saying "Open Season on the Black Man" and "This Should Not Be OK in 2013 America."

In Chicago, some 500 people rallied across from the Everett McKinley Dirksen federal courthouse.

"We are standing up here today to say to our young people, 'we value your lives,'" said Chicago Urban League Chief Executive Officer Andrea Zopp, who has a 17-year-old son. "The civil rights movement is not over."

Rapper MC Lyte told the crowd: "When the verdict was read, I felt like we lost Trayvon Martin all over again."

In Oakland, a crowd of up to 150 people demonstrated peacefully in the city's downtown, occasionally singing "We Shall Overcome" before dispersing in the late afternoon.

And across the bay in San Francisco, about 100 people gathered in front of the Federal Building.

Reverend Arnold Townsend, 70, vice president of the local NAACP chapter, vowed to "bring to light this incident (and) let black children know the system has them under attack."

Big winner in Egypt: flag salesmen

    Hussein Malla / AP

Supporters of Egypt's ousted President Mohammed Morsi wave their national flags during a demonstration in Nasr City in Cairo on July 19.

By Ziad Jaber, Producer, NBC News

CAIRO ? Sayed Ibrahim Ali waved a large flag amid a crowd outside the Rabaa al-Adawiya mosque earlier this week. Supporters of former President Mohammed Morsi have been gathering outside the mosque for the past three weeks demanding he be reinstated.

The 48-year-old mechanic, eagerly shaking his banner in the sun, said ?it represents our goal of wanting to live well, to prosper. We?ve been living in darkness for 30 years.?

The Egyptian flag has become one of the most ubiquitous symbols of this country?s recent upheavals. Red, white, and black, with a golden eagle in the center, the world has watched it fly during countless rallies and protests over the past two years.

    NBC News / Ziad Jaber

21-year-old Mostafa Mohammad has been selling flags in Tahrir Square since the 2011 revolution.

Amid the displays of patriotism, both ends of Egypt?s political spectrum can agree on one thing: This flag, and the country it represents, means everything to them.

And it?s led to a spike in sales of anything sporting the tricolor.

Egyptian flags are everywhere in Cairo, from the peaks of mosque minarets, to party boats on the Nile. Taxi drivers affix them onto dashboards. Young people sport them on clothes from T-shirts to hats. ?

Hassan Ali, a 59-year-old flag salesman, set up shop on a wooden cart just outside the pro-Morsi sit-in.

?I usually sell clothes, but we?re selling these items to feel with our people, to encourage them,? he said. ?Some buy flags for themselves, their wives, their kids. People just want to unite under one banner.?

The flags come in different shapes as sizes. Some are cotton, made here in Egypt. Others are made in China, using more expensive satin material.

    NBC News/ Ziad Jaber

In addition to flags, enterprising salesmen also feature hats and other wearable accessories.

They range in price from 50 cents for smaller ones up to $5 dollars for larger options. Clever local manufacturers have turned them into accessories, too. Most flag stands sell tricolor buttons and bracelets.

In addition to the Egyptian variety, Ali also sold black flags with the seal of Prophet Muhammad, banners associated with Islamic militant groups.

In total, Ali said he averaged roughly 400 flags sales a day. He said that number swells to over 1,000 during massive protests ? but he insisted he had never changed his prices.

On the other side of town, in Tahrir Square, Mostafa Mohammad, 21, had an even larger array of merchandise.? Flags from across the Arab world ? from Palestine to Saudi Arabia ? waved gently at his small market stall.

?I?ve been selling flags on this corner in Tahrir since the Battle of the Camel,? he said, referring to the now infamous moment in 2011 when thugs rushed the square on the backs of camels, beating many of those calling for then-president Hosni Mubarak to step down.

    NBC News / Ziad Jaber

Flag stand outside Morsi rally sold militant Islamic flag in addition to Egyptian flag.

?But by far my best sales day ever was on June 30 of this year,? when he says he sold over 1,500 flags.

Schoolteacher Khalid Hassan Moawwad, 47, was in Tahrir Square on June 30 when millions of Egyptians took to the streets calling for an end to Morsi?s rule.

?The Muslim Brothers don?t have an allegiance to any one country. They don?t believe in the idea of a country,? he said, referring to the Islamist group?s wide reach across the Middle East. ?Islam is about social justice. They don?t believe in that,? he fumed, as he sipped tea at a makeshift coffee shop in the center of Tahrir.

Remone Reda, a 24-year-old Christian, agreed. ?They?re concerned with their own opportunities, not the opportunities of the entire country,? he said, standing on the corner outside Mostafa Mohammad?s flag stand. ?The Muslim Brotherhood associates our flag with Morsi, but it?s not theirs alone.?

House takes up GOP version of No Child Left Behind

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The House is ready to make the final tweaks to its Republican-led rewrite of the sweeping No Child Left Behind education law that governs every school in the country that receives federal education dollars.

Teacher evaluations, school improvement plans and academic standards would be up to each state ? with no say from the U.S. Education Department ? under the revisions being considered Thursday. The bill faces near-unanimous opposition from Democrats and President Barack Obama has threatened a veto.

The legislation would undo many of the accountability provisions implemented under the existing version of the law that Republican President George W. Bush championed. The bill would eliminate dozens of school improvement programs and give state and local officials the power to implement reforms as they deem appropriate.

The legislation explicitly bars Education Secretary Arne Duncan and his successors from encouraging states to implement national achievement standards known as the Common Core. Critics have branded the standards "Obamacore," even though 45 states and the District of Columbia have voluntarily adopted them.

The bill also sends states money in a block grant to teach English-language learners, students from poor families and rural students. States could decide which students would benefit most from those dollars.

Obama threatened Wednesday to veto the bill if it should reach his desk. The White House said the bill "would represent a significant step backwards in the effort to help our nation's children and their families prepare for their futures."

Even with all of its rollback of federal requirements, the bill still came up short for the Republicans' most conservative members. Some have groused that the revisions still put too much emphasis on centralized education programs and keep in place mandatory achievement tests. Other lawmakers have complained the rewrite does not do enough to give parents choices, such as public charter schools or private religious schools.

The conservative Heritage Foundation, too, opposed the bill as too cumbersome.

To soften that criticism, lawmakers planned some adjustments, including an amendment from Majority Leader Eric Cantor, R-Va., that would let students transfer from a public school to a public charter school ? and take with them the federal money that supported the child's public schooling.

A Senate panel has already completed its work on a rewrite of No Child Left Behind. It, too, limits the Education Department's role and lets states write their own plans to improve schools. Unlike the GOP proposal, the secretary of education retains his approval role.

A vote of all senators has not been scheduled. Aides expect it would be autumn, if not later, before it makes its way to the full chamber.
