Voice Dictation Technology A Great Tool For ... - Retirement Homes

It?s incredible how quickly technology changes. In fact, constant change is really the only characteristic of technology that you can count on. Digital technology never stays in one spot. It is constantly in a state of redevelopment and modification. We always try and make the tools we use better, more helpful, more efficient, and overall more accessible for everyone. Even the way we control our technology and interact with it changes frequently.

For instance, as I write this article, I have no keyboard or mouse. Nor am I in my office sitting at a desk. Instead, I?m in a public wireless Internet zone, using an iPad as a dictation tool. I simply speak into the microphone included on the iPad and it types everything that comes out of my mouth. It?s a really neat technology if you?ve never tried it before. However, I did need to learn how to use it properly first.

Voice dictation is something that?s been around for a long time, relatively speaking. Some readers might recall a computer program called Dragon Naturally Speaking, which was a pioneer in voice recognition and dictation. In the early stages of Dragon, the user of the technology would spend hours and hours ?training? the program to understand their voice.

Users would read passages out of a training manual, which slowly trained the program to understand that one particular user. However, when someone new wanted to use the same program, they too would need to complete this lengthy process. At best, once the program was fully set up, it did a decent job of recording the user?s voice in printed text, not great.

The difference now is staggering. Dragon is still available, along with several other voice dictation options, but now, ?out of the box?, these tools are ready to go, no setup or ?training? required. However, to be clear, there are assumptions about the users. For instance, in North America, our technologies normally require users to speak English. Someone with a heavy accent or speech impediment will likely have more difficulty using voice dictation technologies.

There are a few rules of thumb to using dictation technologies, like those available on iPad, Android tablets, and smart phones. First, the user must speak slowly with little or no emotion in their voice, almost as though you are imitating a robot voice. Also, users should speak clearly and annunciate their words, so the dictation tool can really hear the different parts to the word. This helps improve the accuracy of the dictation quite a bit. After you?ve tried this a few times, you?ll get the hang of it!

Whether you?re writing a lengthy email to a family member, taking notes at your retirement home?s resident council meeting, or recording your memoirs to share with your loved ones, new voice dictation technologies are making this chore super simple to accomplish.

It only gets easier from here!

Storms May Speed Ozone Loss Above the U.S.

Summer storms in the United States inject water into the atmosphere at altitudes up to 20 kilometres, accelerating ozone-destroying reactions. Image: Rick D?Elia/Corbis

Showcasing more than fifty of the most provocative, original, and significant online essays from 2011, The Best Science Writing Online 2012 will change the way...

From Nature magazine

Summer thunderstorms across the United States inject water vapour far higher into the atmosphere than was previously believed, promoting a cascade of chemical reactions that could pose an increased threat to Earth?s protective ozone layer as the climate warms.

James Anderson, an atmospheric chemist at Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and his colleagues made the discovery while investigating the origins of high-altitude cirrus clouds ? thin and wispy formations that blanket the sky and trap heat, contributing to the greenhouse effect.

Anderson?s team expected to see summer storms supply cirrus clouds by pumping water vapour up to an average altitude of about 14 kilometres. Instead, the researchers report today in Science1, about half of the storms that they studied injected vapour to altitudes of between 15 and 20 kilometres.

?We were shocked,? says Anderson. ?Standard, run-of-the-mill Midwestern thunderstorms are far more capable of injecting water vapour into the stratosphere than we once thought.?

There are significant implications for stratospheric ozone, which shields the Earth from ultraviolet radiation. Ozone can be destroyed by reactions with chlorine and water ? and the rates of those reactions are governed mainly by temperature and the presence of water vapour. If, as expected, storm activity increases owing to global warming, says Anderson, the proportion of water in the stratosphere will increase, leading to accelerating destruction of stratospheric ozone ? and an increase in the amount of ultraviolet radiation reaching Earth.

Climate calculations

Andrew Dessler, an atmospheric scientist at Texas A&M University in College Station, says that further observations are needed to understand all the implications. ?I?m not at all surprised that this happens,? he says, ?but I think a challenge is really going to be quantifying all aspects of the problem? including the frequency of the water-vapour injections and any resulting stratospheric chlorine reactions.

The affected area of the stratosphere ? between 15 and 20 kilometres in altitude ? contains about 20% of the total stratospheric ozone, and Anderson says that the water-vapour injections could provide conditions for rapid ozone destruction similar to those that scientists have been investigating for decades in Antarctica and more recently in the Arctic.

Currently, water vapour occupies about 5 parts per million by volume (p.p.m.v.) of the affected parts of the stratosphere. If that were to increase to 12 p.p.m.v., up to 25% of the ozone in the affected zone could be destroyed within a week. If water-vapour content climbed to 18 p.p.m.v., about 35% of the ozone could be destroyed in the same time frame.

Kerry Emanuel, a climatologist at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge, says that the study adds urgency to an issue that his profession has yet to clear up: how will storms respond to climate change? ?We really don?t know the answer to that,? he says. ?This is a surprisingly under-developed field.?

Geoengineering risk
The study also raises questions about geoengineering ? the concept of manipulating the environment to mitigate climate change. One method of geoengineering currently being considered would involve pumping sulphate aerosols into the stratosphere to reflect sunlight back into space and cool the planet. But sulphate particles also act as catalysts for ozone-destroying reactions, so such a scheme could speed the reactions. ?The worst cocktail you can think of is to inject a combination of sulphur and water into the stratosphere, and that is exactly what would be happening,? says Anderson. ?Nature would be injecting the water, and humans would be injecting the sulphates.?

"You let your dad down": Twitter troll taunts Tom Daley about dead father after diver misses out on Olympics medal

Police have said they are "actively looking into" the tweet by Rileyy69 which said: "You let your dad down i hope you know that"

Missed out: Tom Daley and his diving partner finished one place outside the medals
Missed out: Tom Daley and his diving partner finished one place outside the medals

Clive Rose

Tom Daley has hit out after a sick Twitter troll accused him of letting down his late father in the Olympics today.

Daley and his partner Pete Waterfield missed out on a medal when they finished fourth in the men's synchronised 10m platform diving event at the Olympics.

Afterwards Daley, whose father Rob died following a cancer battle in May last year, retweeted a message he?d received from ?@Rileyy_69? which said ?you let your dad down i hope you know that.?

The same user sent several other tweets to Daley, including ?hope your crying now you should be?, ?I?d rather support a tramp? and ?he's a little boy who's competing against men?.

At first, once Daley had brought the tweets to the attention of his half a million followers, @Rileyy_69 changed tack and apologised for the jibes.

Troll @Rileyy_69 apologises to Tom Daley

He posted: ?I'm sorry mate i just wanted you to win cause its the olympics I'm just annoyed we didn't win I'm sorry tom accept my apology.?

As the subjects #GetRileyy_69Banned, #ThingsBetterThanRileyy_69 and Rileyy became among the top trending topics in the UK, he sent further messages, saying: ?please i don't want to be hated I'm just sorry you didn't win i was rooting for you pal to do britain all proud just so upset?

He added: ?i never knew your dad past away I've only just found out my mum past away to man.?

Soon, though, he continued the abuse with a string of tweets containing four-letter words aimed at Daley and Sky News.

Tonight, Dorset Police tweeted: "Regarding tweets to @tomdaley1994 - we are aware of the issue and we are actively looking into it."

Daley also retweeted a link to a petition to ban @GetRileyy_69 from Twitter. It attracted over 10,000 signatures in its first five hours.

Daley will now have to wait until the individual platform on the penultimate day of the Games to claim an Olympic medal - the only honour to have eluded him so far in his career.

The 18-year-old will leave the Olympic Village and return to a training base in Southend for six days in preparation for his anticipated clash with China's world champion Bo Qiu.

Daley memorably beat Bo to win the world platform title as a 15-year-old in Rome, but the Chinese has proved unbeatable since.

Speaking before the Olympics, Daley revealed his father "gave me all the inspiration that I've needed".

The 18-year-old told the BBC: "Winning a medal would make all the struggles that I've had worthwhile. It's been my dream since a very young age to compete at an Olympics.

"I'm doing it for myself and my dad. It was both our dreams from a very young age.

"I always wanted to do it and Dad was so supportive of everything.

"It would make it extra special to do it for him."
