Business users "must not ignore" Oracle Java 7 web browser flaws ...

Security researchers claim business users could ignore advice to disable plug-ins over app stability fears.

By Caroline Donnelly, 30 Aug 2012 at 16:44

Security researchers have urged users to disable internet browser Java plug-ins, despite concerns about the impact it will have on their line-of-business applications.

As reported by IT Pro earlier this week, the US government has urged internet users to switch off Java in their web browsers following the discovery of two Oracle Java 7 zero-day vulnerabilities.

The issue is understood to affect web browsers that use the Java 7 plug-in, including Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome, Internet Explorer and Apple Safari.

Removing Java from computers eliminates the attack surface, but it will break browser-based apps.

The bugs allow Java applets to carry out arbitrary operating system commands without permission, which could allow vulnerable systems to be infected with malware.

Despite this, IT security experts claim some enterprise users might be tempted to ignore the US government?s advice because of the disruption it could cause to their business.

For instance, Ziv Mador, director of security research at Trustwave SpiderLabs, said companies that use browser-based Java apps would experience problems.

?Removing Java from computers eliminates the attack surface, but it is used in line-of-business and consumer applications and will clearly break [them].

?[It] is an issue administrators will need to take into account before they act on this [advice],? he added.

This is a view backed by Rik Ferguson, director of security research at anti-virus vendor Trend Micro, who said this could put some users off disabling Java.

?Some users, depending on who their security vendor is, might feel confident enough in its ability to detect every single variant of malware [this could expose them to], which is, perhaps, not that sensible,? said Ferguson.

?There are some workarounds, though, most of which are pretty clunky,? he added.

For instance, IT administrations could tell staff to use a different browser, such as Google Chrome, to run their business applications in and another for general internet use.

?It means having two separate browsers and relying on users to maintain that policy for as long as that alert?s in place, which is why it?s a bit clunky,? he explained.

?The simplest solution would be for Oracle to release a patch, especially as this is a vulnerability that is affecting so many different platforms.

Meanwhile, Tal Be?ery, web research team leader at security vendor Imperva, said it is ?nearly impossible? for IT administrators to disable a single software component on every machine they are responsible for.

?The current case of disabling Java components is no different,? he said.

?Individual users should turn off Java 7 browser plug-ins and only enable them [for] trusted sites, such as [those hosting] Java-powered line of business applications.?

Pressure is growing on Oracle to patch the vulnerabilities ahead of its next Java 7 update, which is due in October, following claims that a Polish IT security research team alerted the software giant to the problem back in April.

Garage door spring replacement is definitely an anticipated measure because springs are often more likely to degeneration. Door rises often do the job a whole lot because they make certain that the door shuts and opens just how it should be. Therefore if you notice that your door is not opening or closing equally, this is often a sign that you have to replace the door springs. Make certain that you examine the garage doors and its springs to be able to avoid any incidents or further damage. There are two door springs for a garage that you must be familiar with, the torsion spring and the expansion spring. Door torsion springs for the garage are found over the the top of garage doors. It operates utilising the mechanism of folding. Tough cables are attached with the garage door, and once the torsion springs start to pose, these cables support the door raise since it starts. Conversely, the torsion rises increase when the door shuts. Torsion springs are hard and dangerous to restore, so that you need to be very careful or even better get yourself a professional assist in doing so.Garage door extension springs utilize the system of stretching. These springs are located on the side of the garage doors and make certain that the door opens and shuts equally on both sides. Extension springs are side-mounted and are frequently long and significant springs. These rises need to be checked and replaced once in a while as they degrade as a result of repeated use and exertion of force.Garage door spring replacement is never easy. In reality, nearly all of the accidents during door repairs for the garage occur while changing the springs. But with skill and appropriate caution to do the job, everything else will only prove right. You need to be in a position to learn how to regulate the springs correctly because either increase or decrease in spring tension may cause the door never to open or close properly. As soon as your door appears imbalanced, chances are you have loose springs somewhere. So be able to check the springs cautiously and do the necessary replacement.Gather all necessary instruments and accessories when you do the garage door spring replacement beforehand that you require. Check the rises and other areas of the gates routinely to know if it is time to do the spring and restoration replacement. There are replacements and also restore as possible do by your self by referring to the guide as your guide. GOP convention buzz: And the 'mystery speaker' is ... Clint Eastwood! (+video)

The latest at the GOP Convention is that Clint Eastwood is the 'TBA' speaker Thursday, slotted just before Marco Rubio introduces Mitt Romney and adding a little Hollywood pizzazz to the evening.

By Brad Knickerbocker,?Staff writer / August 30, 2012

Clint Eastwood, the ?Dirty Harry? star and Oscar-winning director of ?Unforgiven? and ?Million Dollar Baby," endorsed Mitt Romney this month.

Clint Eastwood of ?Make my day? fame is the current thinking among those predicting the identity of Thursday night's mystery speaker at the Republican National Convention.

"It's him," Romney family friend Paul Gilbert told the US News ?Washington Whispers? blog. "I can confirm that, 100 percent." Mr. Gilbert served as the GOP presidential candidate's Arizona state chair.

Fox News is also saying it?s Mr. Eastwood: ?One Republican source told FoxNews.com that Eastwood is indeed the mystery speaker, following an online report that?claimed the actor is planning to travel to Tampa for the convention.? CNN is reporting the same.

IN PICTURES:?The Republican Convention 2012

Like a round from Dirty Harry?s massive revolver, the Eastwood buzz ricocheted elsewhere, including at PolicyMic.com (which bills itself as a voice for millennials), where the headline is ?RNC Schedule of Speakers: LIVE Mystery Speaker is Clint Eastwood.?

Eastwood is prominent on the Monitor?s list of five likely mystery men (or women) designed to generate expectation and enthusiasm on the convention floor: Sarah Palin, Donald Trump, Mitch Daniels, a ?ticked-off CEO,? and Eastwood.

But really, Ms. Palin and The Donald have too much baggage and Gov. Daniels ? a decent man and an effective governor ? is too ? well, think Paul Ryan without the pizzazz.

In any case, the official convention speaking schedule for the night includes a slot for ?to be announced? just before Sen. Marco Rubio of Florida introduces Romney.

Although his political image isn?t as hard-edged as the late Charlton Heston's of ?cold, dead hands? pro-gun fame, Eastwood endorsed John McCain in 2008 and has done the same for Romney this year. He?s described President Obama as ?a greenhorn? who ?didn?t have experience in decision-making."

When Republicans speak of ?Dirty Harry,? they usually mean Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D) of Nevada ? the guy who charged that Romney hadn?t paid any taxes for the past decade.

But tonight at least, the reference seems likely to be to the ?make my day? guy himself.

'Nano machine shop' shapes nanowires, ultrathin films

ScienceDaily (Aug. 29, 2012) ? A new "nano machine shop" that shapes nanowires and ultrathin films could represent a future manufacturing method for tiny structures with potentially revolutionary properties.

The structures might be tuned for applications ranging from high-speed electronics to solar cells and also may have greater strength and unusual traits such as ultrahigh magnetism and "plasmonic resonance," which could lead to improved optics, computers and electronics.

The researchers used their technique to stamp nano- and microgears; form tiny circular shapes out of a material called graphene, an ultrathin sheet of carbon that holds promise for advanced technologies; and change the shape of silver nanowires, said Gary Cheng, an associate professor of industrial engineering at Purdue University.

"We do this shaping at room temperature and atmospheric pressure, like a nano-machine shop," said Cheng, who is working with doctoral students Ji Li, Yiliang Liao, Ting-Fung Chung and Sergey Suslov and physics professor Yong P. Chen.

Graphene and nanowires -- filaments 1,000 times thinner than a human hair -- have numerous potential applications. However, technologies are needed to tailor them for specific uses. The new method, called laser shock-induced shaping, makes it possible to tune nanowires by altering electrical and optoelectrical properties that are critical for electronic components.

The researchers also have shown how laser shock-induced shaping can be used to change the properties of graphene, a step toward harnessing the material for electronic applications.

Findings were detailed in research papers published in the journal Nano Letters, and the work also was highlighted earlier this month in the News and Views section of the journal Nature Photonics.

The technique works by using a multilayered sandwich structure that has a tiny mold at the bottom. Nanowires were situated directly above the mold, and other materials were layered between the nanowires and a glass cover sheet. Exposing this layered "forming unit" to an ultra-fast pulsing laser causes one of the layers to burn up, generating a downward pressure that forces the nanowires into the mold and changes their shape.

"The process could be scaled up for an industrial roll-to-roll manufacturing process by changing laser beam size and scanning speed," Cheng said. "The laser shock-induced shaping approach is fast and low-cost."

Part of the research, funded by the National Science Foundation, was carried out in a specialized clean room at the Birck Nanotechnology Center in Purdue's Discovery Park.

At Venice: Michael Shannon darkens 'Iceman' role

VENICE, Italy (AP) ? Loving father and husband at home, a ruthless killer at work: The real-life Mafia hit man who inspired Ariel Vromen's new film, "The Iceman," had a steep after-work decompression curve.

"The Iceman," which premiered Thursday in competition at the Venice Film Festival, dissects the duality of the real life of Richard Kuklinski, who for decades killed on order while keeping the truth of his occupation from tainting his perfect suburban family life.

The movie stars Michael Shannon, the film world's latest Mafia hit man, Winona Ryder as his unsuspecting wife and Ray Liotta as the Mafia boss who sees hit-man potential in Kuklinski's dispassionate coolness and absence of fear.

Vromen said he was captivated when he saw Kuklinski, who was arrested in 1986, tell his story a 2006 documentary. He said he found himself surprised to feel empathy for a man eventually convicted of at least 100 mob hits and who may have committed more than twice that number.

All the while, Kuklinski created an idealized home life for his wife and two daughters, whom he sent to Catholic school and took on roller skating outings.

"I couldn't stop thinking about it, about why did I care about that really, really extreme monster? And it was haunting me, the fact that I did care, that I had a very, very deep empathy," Vromen said in an interview.

"It was quite a challenging struggle to write a script that would be balanced enough, to show on the one hand that this is the devil, and on the other hand not try to be corny and be an apologist for a character like that.

Vromen said he fought for two years to get Shannon for the role, warding off "the obvious choices."

"Michael Shannon comes with a darkness," Vromen said. "If he comes with darkness, my job is to be, how can I lighten that darkness? How can I make that darkness more refined?"

In a sign that Vromen was onto something, Shannon's two-year-old screen test for the role has gotten over 200,000 hits on YouTube.

"Every time I look at Kuklinski, I see the little boy he once was, and I try to imagine all the fear he had to endure as a child. I also see someone filled with self-loathing," Shannon said. "The one thing he did have in excess was rage. Rather than take it out on bystanders, he takes it out on people who, at the end of the day, weren't so innocent."

While Liotta joined the Hollywood hit men parade with his turn in "Goodfellas," Vromen said choosing him to play Mafia boss Roy Demeo was anything but typecasting.

"Ray didn't do a gangster for quite a long time," he said. "(But) I had to find the guy in Hollywood scarier than Michael Shannon."

Demeo's loyal underling is played against type by David Schwimmer.

"I said 'No, no, no! I can't have Ross from 'Friends' in the movie,'" Vromen said. Then Schwimmer sent pictures of him in makeup and the director saw that "he will do everything and anything to fit in," just like the character: a Jewish guy who wants to be a mobster.

For Ryder, playing the seemingly clueless wife meant she had to purge anything she already knew about Kuklinski, rip out all the script pages dealing with his mob activities and stay clear of the set on days they were filming his criminal side.

She didn't, however, attempt to reach out to the real life Deborah Pellicotti, who has denied any knowledge of her husband's activities and has since changed her name, because "I just don't know what I would have learned that much from her."

While Ryder played the unsuspecting wife, she is not entirely persuaded that was the case.

"I don't think you can be married for that long and go to sleep every night with someone, especially when he is getting up in the middle of dinner and going out and killing ... she's doing laundry, there's got to be blood," Ryder said.

Vromen said the only contact he's had with the Kuklinski family is on Facebook with the older daughter.

"She personally is so in love with her father," Vromen said. " She said it was very, very tough on her and the family to realize who he was, but it didn't take away the love she had. Until today, she refused to read any book or any article or any document about him."

He asked if she would see "The Iceman" and there was silence.

"And I said, 'Well, we got the answer,'" he said.

25th Trip to the Toronto International Film Festival?

As the summer movie season winds down, the focus switches to the fall and the beginning of the cinematic frenzy known as the Oscar race. The traditional start of the search for Oscar worthy filmmaking begins at the Toronto International Film Festival, which I will be attending for the 25th time.?

Last week the official festival guest list was announced, and while there is no George Clooney or Brad Pitt this year, there are plenty of big names coming to town to support their movies. To name a few: Will Smith, Johnny Depp, Bruce Willis, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Jackie Chan, Tom Hanks, Halle Berry, Bill Murray, Robert Redford, Ryan Gosling, Robert De Niro, Dennis Quaid, Jennifer Connelly, Billy Bob Thornton, Bradley Cooper, Penelope Cruz, Marion Cotillard, Colin Firth, Kate Hudson, Kiefer Sutherland, Gwyneth Paltrow, Viggo Mortensen, Javier Bardem, Adam Sandler, Laura Linney, Keira Knightley, Mads Mikkelsen, Jake Gyllenhaal, Jennifer Lawrence, Julianne Moore, Terence Stamp and Vanessa Redgrave.?

The directors? list includes a first timer by the name of Dustin Hoffman, Joss Whedon, Neil Jordan, Barry Levinson, Ben Affleck, David O. Russell, Tom Tykwer, Lana Wachowski, Andy Wachowski and Rob Zombie.?

According to the TIFF fact sheet, the festival will present 372 films (289 features and 83 shorts), from 72 countries. I hope to see about 30 of them in nine days.?

Here is my list of the 10 movies I?m most excited about seeing.?

?

Looper ? This time travel sci-fi flick from director Rian Johnson and star Joseph Gordon-Levitt, will kick off the festival. I?m a big fan of their previous collaboration, Brick. The film also stars Bruce Willis, Emily Blunt, Paul Dano and Jeff Daniels.?

The Master ? Paul Thomas Anderson?s first movie since There Will Be Blood stars Philip Seymour Hoffman as the mysterious leader of a religious cult (inspired by Scientology?s L. Ron Hubbard) who takes a wayward man (Joaquin Phoenix) under his wing.?

This book cover image released by Dutton shows "No Easy Day: The Firsthand Account of the Mission that Killed Osama Bin Laden," by Mark Owen with Kevin Maurer. A first-hand account of the Navy SEAL mission that killed Osama bin Laden is coming out Sept. 11. Dutton announced Wednesday that Mark Owen?s ?No Easy Day? will ?set the record straight? on the raid in Pakistan in May 2011. ?Mark Owen? is a pseudonym for the combat veteran who was one of the first fighters to enter bin Laden?s third floor hideout and also witnessed his death, according to Dutton, an imprint of Penguin Group (USA). (AP Photo/Dutton)

(AP) ? A firsthand account of the Navy SEAL raid that killed Osama bin Laden contradicts previous accounts by administration officials, raising questions as to whether the terror mastermind presented a clear threat when SEALs first fired upon him.

Bin Laden apparently was hit in the head when he looked out of his bedroom door into the top-floor hallway of his compound as SEALs rushed up a narrow stairwell in his direction, according to former Navy SEAL Matt Bissonnette, writing under the pseudonym Mark Owen in "No Easy Day." The book is to be published next week by Penguin Group (USA)'s Dutton imprint.

Bissonnette says he was directly behind a "point man" going up the stairs in the pitch black hallway. "Less than five steps" from top of the stairs, he heard "suppressed" gunfire: "BOP. BOP." The point man had seen a "man peeking out of the door" on the right side of the hallway.

The author writes that bin Laden ducked back into his bedroom and the SEALs followed, only to find the terrorist crumpled on the floor in a pool of blood with a hole visible on the right side of his head and two women wailing over his body.

Bissonnette says the point man pulled the two women out of the way and shoved them into a corner and he and the other SEALs trained their guns' laser sites on bin Laden's still-twitching body, shooting him several times until he lay motionless. The SEALs later found two weapons stored by the doorway, untouched, the author said.

In the account related by administration officials after the raid in Pakistan, the SEALs shot bin Laden only after he ducked back into the bedroom because they assumed he might be reaching for a weapon.

White House spokesman Tommy Vietor would not comment on the apparent contradiction late Tuesday. But he said in an email, "As President Obama said on the night that justice was brought to Osama bin Laden, 'We give thanks for the men who carried out this operation, for they exemplify the professionalism, patriotism and unparalleled courage of those who serve our country.'"

"No Easy Day" was due out Sept. 11, but Dutton announced the book would be available a week early, Sept. 4, because of a surge of orders due to advance publicity that drove the book to the top of the Amazon.com and Barnes & Noble.com best-seller lists.

The Associated Press purchased a copy of the book Tuesday.

The account is sure to again raise questions as to whether the raid was intended to capture or simply to kill bin Laden. Bissonette writes that during a pre-raid briefing, a lawyer from "either" the White House or Defense Department told them that they were not on an assassination mission. According to Bissonnette, the lawyer said that if bin Laden was "naked with his hands up," they should not "engage" him. If bin Laden did not pose a threat, they should "detain him."

In another possibly uncomfortable revelation for U.S. officials who say bin Laden's body was treated with dignity before being given a full Muslim burial at sea, the author reveals that in the cramped helicopter flight out of the compound, one of the SEALs called "Walt" ? one of the pseudonyms the author used for his fellow SEALs ? was sitting on bin Laden's chest as the body lay at the author's feet in the middle of the cabin, for the short flight to a refueling stop inside Pakistan where a third helicopter was waiting.

This is common practice, as troops sometimes must sit on their own war dead in packed helicopters. Space was cramped because one of the helicopters had crashed in the initial assault, leaving little space for the roughly two dozen commandos in the two aircraft that remained. When the commandos reached the third aircraft, bin Laden's body was moved to it.

Bissonnette writes disparagingly that none of the SEALs were fans of President Barack Obama and knew that his administration would take credit for ordering the May 2011 raid. One of the SEALs said after the mission that they had just gotten Obama re-elected by carrying out the raid.

But he says they respected him as commander in chief and for giving the operation the go-ahead.

Bissonnette writes less flatteringly of meeting Vice President Joe Biden along with Obama at the headquarters of the 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment after the raid. He says Biden told "lame jokes" no one understood, reminding him of "someone's drunken uncle at Christmas dinner."

Beyond such embarrassing observations, U.S. officials fear the book may include classified information, as it did not undergo the formal review required by the Pentagon for works published by former or current Defense Department employees.

Officials from the Pentagon and the CIA, which commanded the mission, are examining the manuscript for possible disclosure of classified information and could take legal action against the author.

In a statement provided to The Associated Press, the author says he did "not disclose confidential or sensitive information that would compromise national security in any way."

New mums could face debt problems | Chiltern Debt Management

According to figures, almost three in ten new mums will face debt problems while they are on maternity leave from their work.

The information released has revealed that new mothers will rack up an average debt of ?2,500, with just a quarter feeling as though they are financially secure when it comes to motherhood.

The views on 1,008 new mums were taken into consideration by an online poll carried out by EasyInsites for uSwitch.com.

The poll found that 10% ? or one in ten ? were forced to borrow from their close friends and family, with 14% choosing loans, overdrafts and credit cards to ease the financial burden put upon them.

Ann Robinson, uSwitch.com?s director of consumer policy, said: ?Sadly very few mums have the luxury of being able to stay at home for the whole of their maternity leave and even fewer have the choice to be a stay at home mum.

?It?s clear more needs to be done by the government to help families cope with the financial burden of parenthood, but in the meantime families can help their situation by reviewing household budgets and looking at where they can cut costs to save a bit of extra cash.?

GOP convention gets rowdy in rift over Ron Paul

Rep. Ron Paul, R-Texas, talks with a Texas delegate on the floor at the Republican National Convention in Tampa, Fla., on Tuesday, Aug. 28, 2012. (AP Photo/Jae C. Hong)

(AP) ? Feeling slighted, supporters of Texas Rep. Ron Paul's presidential bid chanted and booed Tuesday after Republican convention delegates adopted new rules that could impede insurgent candidates in the future.

The brief uproar was a rare unscripted moment in a carefully-choreographed convention that organizers hoped would showcase Republican harmony over nominee Mitt Romney. After the voice vote on the rules, the next speaker was quickly called in an attempt to limiting the amount of time Paul's supporters had to chant "Shame on you."

The rules are designed to limit the ability of insurgent presidential candidates to amass delegates to future Republican conventions. They will bind delegates to the outcome of presidential primaries and caucuses, preventing a candidate like Paul from pushing up their delegate counts at state conventions.

Paul delegates saw them as a power play by the Republican old guard.

"If you're trying to win a presidential campaign and put on a show, you shouldn't poke a sharp stick in the eye of conservative activists. That's what happened," said Colorado delegate Dudley Brown, who leads a gun rights organization back home.

Paul didn't win a single presidential primary but he got 190 delegate votes during the roll call of states that officially nominated Romney Tuesday. Romney got 2,061.

Paul briefly showed up on the convention floor, signing autographs and posing for photos. As he left the arena, he declined to say if he felt his delegates were being treated unfairly. "I'll let you know when it's over," he said.

Paul later said in a broadcast interview that he has no plans to endorse anyone for president.

"I am endorsing, you know, peace and prosperity and individual liberty, the Constitution, and I'm more intense on that than I am on the politics of it," Paul told Fox News.

Supporters of the new rules say voters expect the delegate count to reflect the outcome of state primaries and caucuses. The convention's rules committee made some late revisions to the new rules to placate party activists who weren't necessarily Paul backers.

The new rules originally allowed presidential candidates to choose which delegates would represent them at the convention ? taking that power from state parties. However, in a concession to local activists, party leaders agreed to remove the language. Instead, the rules say that delegates who support candidates other than the one they are obligated to support shall have their votes deemed "null and void."

"These rules will provide a strong governing framework for our convention and for our party," said former New Hampshire Gov. John Sununu, who headed the rules committee.

Mississippi Republican National Committeeman Henry Barbour said delegates shouldn't let a fight over rules distract from the goal of beating Democratic President Barack Obama.

"None of us want a campaign overreaching," Barbour said. "We want bound delegates to live up to their commitment."

Benefits of Using Levitra | Recreation and Sports

If you are experiencing erectile dysfunction, you may be suffering from physical as well as emotional symptoms. Although many drugs prescribed for this condition are made to address the physical, there can be secondary effects that benefit you in other ways. Levitra is one such drug that can improve your quality of life significantly.

Sex is important for many reasons, and Levitra can help a man suffering from erectile dysfunction get back an active sex life. Having sex has many positive physical benefits. For one, it relieves stress. This can result in a lowered blood pressure and can improve your immune system. Also, sexual intercourse is a physical activity that can burn up to 85 calories per hour. This doesn?t sound like much, but it can certainly add up over time. Sex and physical activity will help you sleep better, and sleep is important for overall health.

These feelings can negatively impact you and your partner?s quality of life. Not only does this affect your home life, but it can also leak into other parts of your life such as your job performance. Levitra can restore your sex life, increase your self-esteem, help your relationship, and thereby reduce these psychological symptoms.

    93% Neil Young Journeys

    All Critics (43) | Top Critics (20) | Fresh (40) | Rotten (3)

"Journeys" is simply a trip most need not take.

I'd say the movie does a fine job of completing the trilogy, but I wouldn't be surprised if Demme and Young have more in them yet.

Like Young, Demme often takes an iconoclastic route. This is in part a concert film, yes, but not a traditional one.

Forget Crosby, Stills and Nash and maybe even Crazy Horse. Jonathan Demme might be Neil Young's ultimate collaborator.

As a songwriter, Young can still deliver: one of the best tunes here is a lovely, piano-propelled number, "Leia," that he hasn't even released yet.

The wartsy antipode of Katy Perry: Part of Me, with an intimacy and intensity bordering on the overwhelming.

"Journeys" is about looking back - not in sorrow or wistfulness, but in affection and, often, impassioned remembrance of times past and how they still resonate in the present.

A mesmerizing and intimate visit with a performer who is identified most closely with rock 'n' roll, but whose artistic curiosity has taken him in myriad directions musically throughout his 40-plus-year career.

Neil Young Journeys does for some of us what a rare film can do - it revives and renews our spirit. Neil Young and Jonathan Demme. Heart and soul. Wisdom and age. Fire and ashes. Lightning and thunder.

For fans, Journeys is like that box set of uneven rarities that they simply must own. For casual friends, it's 90 minutes in good company. For the rest - ho-hum.

An unusually fulsome tribute to the singer-songwriter from the director of The Silence of the Lambs.

On its own terms, "Neil Young Journeys" is an enjoyable concert film of a solo show in Toronto, interspersed with memories of his Canadian boyhood.

The concert camera work is sometimes a little tight for comfort (not really interested in Young's bridge work), though it adds to the intensity.

Movie fans probably don't need to hear him sing "Ohio" again, but "Neil Young Journeys" -- Jonathan Demme's second Young doc, if you're counting -- does have some new wrinkles.

In a sense, this film finishes a cycle that began with the homey and impressive "Neil Young: Heart of Gold" and continued with the raucous "Neil Young Trunk Show" of 2009.

"Look at Mother Nature on the run..."

A portrait of a true musical legend who is equally fascinating both onstage and off.

'Heart of Gold' was a great concert film, and 'Journeys' doesn't match it. BHut on its own it's a highly enjoyable ninety minutes of music and droll talk.

New N.W.T oil prospect raising economic hopes and environmental ...

CALGARY - A potentially enormous new shale oil prospect in the Northwest Territories is giving some communities hope that the resource-driven economic boost they've long been waiting for may finally be close.

But development of the shale oil find, known as the Canol, has also raised concern over the use of hydraulic fracturing, also known as fracking, in a remote, ecologically fragile part of the central Mackenzie Valley that is new to that oil and gas extraction technique.

"If they're going to do fracking, at least let us be involved so that we can watch the process, we can make sure it's nice and clean because we do need economics around this area," said Chief Wilfred McNeely Jr. of the Fort Good Hope Band.

McNeely said some residents are concerned about how much water would be drawn from the Mackenzie River for the fracking process, in which producers inject water, sand and chemicals into the rock at high pressure in order free the oil and gas. He said some have also expressed concern over chemicals contaminating the river.

But unemployment in the community of 567 is high, so said he'd welcome the jobs and investment that would come from oil development.

In June two parcels of land around Fort Good Hope were leased for $92 million ? one to Royal Dutch Shell PLC, and another to Shell and MGM Energy Corp. (TSX:MGM) in partnership.

"To me that adds up to a lot of money," said McNeely. "Having these oil companies in the country, I look at it as a positive thing."

Those leases are in addition to 11 more that were awarded elsewhere in the central Mackenzie last year for a total of $535 million to major players including Husky Energy Inc. (TSX:HSE), Imperial Oil Ltd. (TSX:IMO) and ConocoPhillips.

The Canol stretches from around the Fort Good Hope region south to the hamlet of Tulita, between the Mackenzie River and the mountain range to the west ? a "massive piece of real estate," according to David Ramsay, the Northwest Territories' minister of industry, tourism, investment and transportation.

He said there could be between two and three billion barrels of recoverable oil in the Canol, putting it the same league as the Bakken, a major shale oil region that underlies parts of North Dakota, Montana and Saskatchewan.

The economic upswing was evident last winter while some seismic work was taking place around Normal Wells, N.W.T. Hotel rooms were virtually unobtainable, store sales doubled and takeoffs and landings at the local airport tripled, he said.

"It's that kind of activity that's going to drive the economy. We have always struggled with employment levels in smaller aboriginal communities in the Northwest Territories."

This winter Husky is planning to evaluate two vertical wells it drilled in the area a year earlier, and is seeking regulatory approval to build an all-weather access road around its leases.

Ramsay acknowledges there are concerns over fracking. He and other members of his government will be in Calgary the week of August 20 to meet with industry, regulators and environmental groups to learn more.

"People want to know, and people have every right to know, what the impact on the water will be, the chemicals that would be used."

Environmental lawyer Stephen Hazell, who participated in lengthy regulatory hearings into the Mackenzie natural gas pipeline, said shale oil development in the North should be rigorously studied.

Fracking in and of itself has concerns, he said, but heavy equipment moving over permafrost raises a whole host of other environmental issues.

"It needs to be a review that has hearings, that invited people who've got experience with shale oil and fracking in other parts in North America to come up and testify," said the founder of Ecovision Law in Ottawa.

"They need to be serious about it and not do a quick and dirty internal review."

The Mackenzie gas pipeline, which would carry gas from fields near the coast of Beaufort Sea south to Alberta, has been proposed in various in one way or another for decades, but has yet to come to fruition.

The project, led by Imperial, was awarded a federal permit last year, but the companies behind the proposal haven't committed to building it. Fiscal talks between Ottawa and the proponents are on ice for now.

Energy consultant Doug Matthews, who organized the trip for Northwest Territories politicians next week, said oil development will be good for the people of the Northwest Territories.

"While (the Mackenzie pipeline) may not be officially dead, it's certainly in a very deep sleep and there's not going to be any activity flowing to the people in the North from the project, certainly for the foreseeable future."

There is already an oil pipeline owned by Enbridge that runs from Norman Wells to northern Alberta that has a lot of capacity to spare. But if the Canol ends up being as big as some are predicting, another pipeline may need to be built ? and that won't be easy in light of recent concerns over spills.

Enbridge's Norman Wells pipeline leaked last year near Wrigley, N.W.T.

"That gives people pause. Understandably they'd be concerned about the impact of the spill," said Matthews.

Fred Carmichael is chairman of the Aboriginal Pipeline Group, which owns an equity stake in the Mackenzie gas pipeline. Through the shale oil find in the central part of the valley could be good news, he said it's important to stay the course on the natural gas pipeline, which he sees moving forward in the next three to five years.

There's been no mining in that region and the anti-fur movement has damaged its traditional hunting and trapping industries, Carmichael said. So energy development will help communities there be self-sufficient, rather than reliant on the government.

"We had a very, very self-sustaining industry of our own before and we want to go back there."
