According to figures, almost three in ten new mums will face debt problems while they are on maternity leave from their work.
The information released has revealed that new mothers will rack up an average debt of ?2,500, with just a quarter feeling as though they are financially secure when it comes to motherhood.
The views on 1,008 new mums were taken into consideration by an online poll carried out by EasyInsites for uSwitch.com.
The poll found that 10% ? or one in ten ? were forced to borrow from their close friends and family, with 14% choosing loans, overdrafts and credit cards to ease the financial burden put upon them.
Ann Robinson, uSwitch.com?s director of consumer policy, said: ?Sadly very few mums have the luxury of being able to stay at home for the whole of their maternity leave and even fewer have the choice to be a stay at home mum.
?It?s clear more needs to be done by the government to help families cope with the financial burden of parenthood, but in the meantime families can help their situation by reviewing household budgets and looking at where they can cut costs to save a bit of extra cash.?
