Washington University featured in Times for insurance coverage

Washington University in St. Louis

Washington University in St. Louis was featured in the New York Times this week for being among a growing number of universities within the last decade to offer health insurance plans that cover gender reassignment surgery.

Brown University announced last week that its health insurance plan would extend coverage to include gender reassignment surgery beginning in August, growing the list of colleges to offer this coverage to 36.

Steven Givens, Washington University?s associate vice chancellor for public affairs, said the university began offering this coverage six years ago at the request of students, which made it one of the first universities to do so.

"Washington University is proud of the support it extends to its GLBT (gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered) community, and this health insurance coverage is one aspect of that support. WUSTL is consistently ranked as one of America?s most GLBT-friendly campuses, receiving five out of five stars from the Campus Pride LGBT-Friendly Campus Climate Index, a national organization that ranks campuses for LGBT policy inclusion,? according to a statement from Washington University.

The current student enrollment at Washington University is 14,117, according to the school's website. The school's endowment is $5.3 billion, according to school officials.
