Storms May Speed Ozone Loss Above the U.S.

Summer storms in the United States inject water into the atmosphere at altitudes up to 20 kilometres, accelerating ozone-destroying reactions. Image: Rick D?Elia/Corbis

Showcasing more than fifty of the most provocative, original, and significant online essays from 2011, The Best Science Writing Online 2012 will change the way...

From Nature magazine

Summer thunderstorms across the United States inject water vapour far higher into the atmosphere than was previously believed, promoting a cascade of chemical reactions that could pose an increased threat to Earth?s protective ozone layer as the climate warms.

James Anderson, an atmospheric chemist at Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and his colleagues made the discovery while investigating the origins of high-altitude cirrus clouds ? thin and wispy formations that blanket the sky and trap heat, contributing to the greenhouse effect.

Anderson?s team expected to see summer storms supply cirrus clouds by pumping water vapour up to an average altitude of about 14 kilometres. Instead, the researchers report today in Science1, about half of the storms that they studied injected vapour to altitudes of between 15 and 20 kilometres.

?We were shocked,? says Anderson. ?Standard, run-of-the-mill Midwestern thunderstorms are far more capable of injecting water vapour into the stratosphere than we once thought.?

There are significant implications for stratospheric ozone, which shields the Earth from ultraviolet radiation. Ozone can be destroyed by reactions with chlorine and water ? and the rates of those reactions are governed mainly by temperature and the presence of water vapour. If, as expected, storm activity increases owing to global warming, says Anderson, the proportion of water in the stratosphere will increase, leading to accelerating destruction of stratospheric ozone ? and an increase in the amount of ultraviolet radiation reaching Earth.

Climate calculations

Andrew Dessler, an atmospheric scientist at Texas A&M University in College Station, says that further observations are needed to understand all the implications. ?I?m not at all surprised that this happens,? he says, ?but I think a challenge is really going to be quantifying all aspects of the problem? including the frequency of the water-vapour injections and any resulting stratospheric chlorine reactions.

The affected area of the stratosphere ? between 15 and 20 kilometres in altitude ? contains about 20% of the total stratospheric ozone, and Anderson says that the water-vapour injections could provide conditions for rapid ozone destruction similar to those that scientists have been investigating for decades in Antarctica and more recently in the Arctic.

Currently, water vapour occupies about 5 parts per million by volume (p.p.m.v.) of the affected parts of the stratosphere. If that were to increase to 12 p.p.m.v., up to 25% of the ozone in the affected zone could be destroyed within a week. If water-vapour content climbed to 18 p.p.m.v., about 35% of the ozone could be destroyed in the same time frame.

Kerry Emanuel, a climatologist at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge, says that the study adds urgency to an issue that his profession has yet to clear up: how will storms respond to climate change? ?We really don?t know the answer to that,? he says. ?This is a surprisingly under-developed field.?

Geoengineering risk
The study also raises questions about geoengineering ? the concept of manipulating the environment to mitigate climate change. One method of geoengineering currently being considered would involve pumping sulphate aerosols into the stratosphere to reflect sunlight back into space and cool the planet. But sulphate particles also act as catalysts for ozone-destroying reactions, so such a scheme could speed the reactions. ?The worst cocktail you can think of is to inject a combination of sulphur and water into the stratosphere, and that is exactly what would be happening,? says Anderson. ?Nature would be injecting the water, and humans would be injecting the sulphates.?

"You let your dad down": Twitter troll taunts Tom Daley about dead father after diver misses out on Olympics medal

Police have said they are "actively looking into" the tweet by Rileyy69 which said: "You let your dad down i hope you know that"

Missed out: Tom Daley and his diving partner finished one place outside the medals

Clive Rose

Tom Daley has hit out after a sick Twitter troll accused him of letting down his late father in the Olympics today.

Daley and his partner Pete Waterfield missed out on a medal when they finished fourth in the men's synchronised 10m platform diving event at the Olympics.

Afterwards Daley, whose father Rob died following a cancer battle in May last year, retweeted a message he?d received from ?@Rileyy_69? which said ?you let your dad down i hope you know that.?

The same user sent several other tweets to Daley, including ?hope your crying now you should be?, ?I?d rather support a tramp? and ?he's a little boy who's competing against men?.

At first, once Daley had brought the tweets to the attention of his half a million followers, @Rileyy_69 changed tack and apologised for the jibes.

Troll @Rileyy_69 apologises to Tom Daley

He posted: ?I'm sorry mate i just wanted you to win cause its the olympics I'm just annoyed we didn't win I'm sorry tom accept my apology.?

As the subjects #GetRileyy_69Banned, #ThingsBetterThanRileyy_69 and Rileyy became among the top trending topics in the UK, he sent further messages, saying: ?please i don't want to be hated I'm just sorry you didn't win i was rooting for you pal to do britain all proud just so upset?

He added: ?i never knew your dad past away I've only just found out my mum past away to man.?

Soon, though, he continued the abuse with a string of tweets containing four-letter words aimed at Daley and Sky News.

Tonight, Dorset Police tweeted: "Regarding tweets to @tomdaley1994 - we are aware of the issue and we are actively looking into it."

Daley also retweeted a link to a petition to ban @GetRileyy_69 from Twitter. It attracted over 10,000 signatures in its first five hours.

Daley will now have to wait until the individual platform on the penultimate day of the Games to claim an Olympic medal - the only honour to have eluded him so far in his career.

The 18-year-old will leave the Olympic Village and return to a training base in Southend for six days in preparation for his anticipated clash with China's world champion Bo Qiu.

Daley memorably beat Bo to win the world platform title as a 15-year-old in Rome, but the Chinese has proved unbeatable since.

Speaking before the Olympics, Daley revealed his father "gave me all the inspiration that I've needed".

The 18-year-old told the BBC: "Winning a medal would make all the struggles that I've had worthwhile. It's been my dream since a very young age to compete at an Olympics.

"I'm doing it for myself and my dad. It was both our dreams from a very young age.

"I always wanted to do it and Dad was so supportive of everything.

"It would make it extra special to do it for him."

Neighbors say Colo. shooting suspect likely facing eviction

AURORA, Colo. (Reuters) - Colorado shooting suspect James Holmes was likely facing eviction from the Aurora apartment that authorities say he booby-trapped with explosives last week, neighbors said.

Holmes, a former University of Colorado graduate student, is accused of killing 12 people and wounding 58 others in a shooting rampage at a midnight movie premiere of "A Dark Knight Rises" on July 20, and wiring his apartment with enough explosives to have leveled the building if they had detonated.

Neighbors and students in the North Aurora neighborhood where Holmes lived said Holmes' withdrawal from the University of Colorado Anschutz Medical Campus a month before the shooting would likely have triggered his eviction from the building, which is reserved for people affiliated with the school.

Officials at the University of Colorado have said Holmes was enrolled in the school's Ph.D. neuroscience program, but he withdrew last month.

Nine days before the shooting, Holmes was seen on Paris Street, asking landlords and neighbors if anyone was aware of a vacant apartment in the area, several neighbors told Reuters.

Holmes was arrested in the movie theater parking lot shortly after the shooting, and told officers his apartment contained explosives, police said.

Law enforcement officials told Reuters the third floor Paris Street apartment was rigged with 30 homemade explosives, chemicals designed to accelerate a fire sparked by the bombs, and trip wires to trigger the blast as soon as a person attempted to enter the booby-trapped apartment.

The building was evacuated. But the explosives were later safely dismantled and removed by authorities, and Holmes' neighbors returned to their homes.

'EYES KEPT FLUTTERING'

On July 11, at around 3:30 p.m, Holmes approached neighbor Carl Pedro Allen, 54, who was sitting in front of 1733 Paris Street -- about a block away from Holmes' apartment building. Holmes asked Allen, and others gathered there, if they knew of any vacant one-bedroom apartments.

"We let him know there were no vacancies, but we told him about where he might be able to find an open apartment," Allen said.

Holmes was wearing jeans and sneakers and described himself as a local student, Allen said. But Allen also said he noticed something strange about Holmes' eyes.

"His eyes were fluttering and blinking," Allen said. "It was really weird. I didn't know if he was high or what, but those eyes kept fluttering."

Two others who witnessed the incident, Ashley Jones, 25, and Rosando "JR" Causus, a maintenance man at 1733 Paris Street, independently confirmed Allen's story.

At Holmes' initial court appearance last week, observers said his eyes fluttered wildly and he blinked repeatedly. He is due back in court on Monday.

Joan Holley of Holley Realty, which manages the building at 1690 Paris Street where Holmes lived, could not be reached for comment. She had previously told Reuters that she would not comment on matters related to the building.

Kylina Washington, 14, said she and her friend Asia Quinn spoke with Holmes around the same time Allen said he did, behind a 7-Eleven where clerks recognized Holmes as a regular customer.

"He said he was moving," Washington said.

Tori Everhart, 27, a resident in Holmes' building, said Holley Realty representatives told her the building was reserved for University of Colorado students, faculty and staff.

A second student resident, who was moving his belongings out of a second floor apartment and into a U-Haul truck on Saturday afternoon and declined to give his name, confirmed the policy.

"Only residents and faculty can live here," he said. The student said withdrawal from the school would require a resident to leave within a month.

A third student exiting the complex, who also declined to allow her name to be used, confirmed the policy.

PFT: Harbaugh's act growing a bit thin?

Jim HarbaughAP

You can?t argue that 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh has the back of his players.

You also can?t argue that people are snickering behind the back of the second-year coach after yet another rambling diatribe.

After having previously declared Alex Smith the smartest quarterback he?s ever seen, Michael Crabtree the owner of the best hands ever, and denying the 49ers ever had interest in Peyton Manning (and you?re diabolical if you think so), it?s becoming easy to tune him out when he gets into this mode.

But the latest player to benefit from Harbaugh?s unsolicited defense is first-round pick A.J. Jenkins, who some have already declared a disappointment.

In what Matt Maiocco of CSNBayArea.com described as an ?unscheduled trip to the podium,? Harbaugh ripped the critics who ripped his rookie receiver.

?A.J Jenkins was an outstanding football player when he got here,? Harbaugh said. ?His progress has been very, very good, and exceeded expectations.

?For those ? the scribes, pundits, so-called experts ? who have gone so far as to say that he?s going to be a bust, should just stop. I recommend that because they?re making themselves look more clueless than they already did.

?I?ll go on record: A.J. is going to be an outstanding football player. So far in camp and what he?s done in the offseason has led us to believe nothing but he?ll be an outstanding football player in the National Football League.?

Harbaugh went onto say: ?And, yeah, I?m going to keep track of some of these names of so-called experts who were making these comments. And there?s going to be an ?I told you so.? I foresee that happening.?

Listen Jim, we get it. You?re there to shield your players, to make them feel loved. To make sure that if the world doesn?t believe in them, you do. And of course it?s too soon to declare a rookie a bust.

But this protest-too-much act is growing old, fast.

The Jenkins defense, like the Manning denial, was unprompted, which does nothing but make the coach look thin-skinned and reactionary, and worried too much about the voices outside his building.

As long as they win, it?ll be fine. But the moment things slow down, who knows who Harbaugh?s going to choose to lash out at.

Mount Diablo Unified Community Advisory Committee on Special ...

By Theresa Harrington

After raising questions about the Mt. Diablo school district?s plans for special education and transportation, I received two documents today ? one from a parent and one from Superintendent Steven Lawrence. Here is a letter sent to many special education parents regarding transportation plans:

?June 20, 2012

Dear Parents and Guardians,

Please read this entire letter as it contains important information regarding changes for students who are eligible for transportation as a related service as part oftheir Individual Education Plan {lEP). All changes will commence during the 2012/2013 school year. The Mt. Diablo Unified School District (?District?) strives to provide quality educational programs in challenging fiscal times. As such, the District recently participated in a Financial Crisis & Management Assistance Team (FCMAT) study to assist with identifying more effective and efficient means to proVide special education transportation.

The study revealed that we are significantly overidentifying transportation as a related service for special education students. For example, the District currently provides transportation to 26% of our students with an IEP; however, in most districts reviewed by FCMAT the average was approximately 10%. The FCMAT team found that the District has an inordinately high number of parents who receive reimbursement in lieu of transpol1ation services. One similarly sized district has only two (2) parents who are paid in lieu whlle we reimburse one hundred forty-four (144) parents. In response to the FCMAT findings and recommendations, the District is modifying speciial education transportation services as follows.

Parent Reimbursements. Effective immediately transportation reimbursements will only be offered when the District is unable to transport the student. Current parent reimbursement arrangements will be honored through extended school year 2012. Any new reimbursement requests require priorapproval from Angie Goakey, Transportation Supervisor.

Home School. Beginning August 26, 2012, students who receive special education services at their home school will not receive transportation unless the IEP team determines that a student?s unique needs require transportation

.

Cluster Model. Beginning on Monday, January 7, 2013, the District will transition to a School to School (Cluster) Transportation mode. Unless otherwise noted in a student?s IEP, all transportation for students with IEPs will be from school of residence to school of placement. High school students who live in the Bay Point area will have a cluster point (bus pick-up/drop-off location) at Riverview Middle School. Middle school students who reside in the former Glenbrook Middle School attendance area will have a cluster point at the Glenbrook site.
Transportation as a related service will be reviewed with you prior to January 2013. Any specialized transportation needs will be determined by the students IEP team and documented in an IEP. Students who are medically fragile or pose significant safety concerns to themselves or others will continue to be eligible for door to door transportation. Transportation services will be reviewed at your student?s annuallEP meeting, or earlier, if needed.

We understand these changes impact your child. It is our desire to work with families during this transition. To help with the transition and answer questions the district will be offering the following:

o Parent informational meeting(s) in September 2012 (dates and location to be announced)

o Website with information regarding transportation changes and frequently asked questions

o An email address available for sending specific questions regarding transportation

For assistance during the summer break please contact: Carolyn Patton, Administrator, Special Education, (925) 682-8000, Ext. 4187; or Angie Goakey, Transportation Supervisor, (925) 682-8000, Ext. 3709.

Sincerely,

Mildred D. Browne, Ed. D., Assistant Superintendent of Pupil Services and Special Ed-ucation
Greg Rolen, General Counsel?

The above document appears to be the letter referenced by Carolyn Patton on June 25 when she told the board about the FCMAT findings:http://youtu.be/LV93z1d7wIk
However, Patton said the draft letter was from herself and Rolen. Instead, the final letter sent out was signed by Mildred Browne and Rolen.

I also received the following email from Lawrence:
?Theresa,
I needed to check with Carolyn and I believe this is the letter you are referring to. It is a (sic) exit letter of the FCMAT audit.?

But the attachment he sent was not a letter. Instead, it was a draft Transportation Review from FCMAT (Fiscal Crisis & Management Team):http://www.docstoc.com/docs/document-preview.aspx?doc_id=124831160

This report is dated July 18. That is one day BEFORE Lawrence sent me the email below, dated June 19, in response to my email asking for the FCMAT report and letter mentioned at the board meeting:
?That?s interesting because I have not received a draft or final report from FCMAT. I will have to check with Board members to determine where the reports they have received came from because to my knowledge no one at the district has received copies of the draft or final reports.?

So, it appears that Lawrence may have inadvertently attached the report that he previously claimed no one had received. It?s still unclear what document Patton was referencing when she told the board in June: ?In response to the FCMAT report, we have already seen the preliminary findings?.? She also said, ?As I think you have all seen, the FCMAT study identified?.?

(AP) ? Miami police say they are searching for a man who shot at least three people in an apparent domestic dispute.

Detective William Moreno said Sunday that 23-year-old Erin Cash was driving with his girlfriend and their 3-year-old son when she jumped out of the car. He continued on with the boy to visit relatives. The woman was not identified, but Moreno described the incident as a domestic violence situation.

Cash dropped off the boy at his mother's house before driving to a home where the woman's two brothers were. Police say Cash shot at them both and injured a bystander. Their injuries are not life-threatening.

Police say Cash has "assured" them that he won't surrender to authorities.

EYES ON LONDON: Brief shower doesn't dampen mood

LONDON (AP) ? Around the 2012 Olympics and its host city with journalists from The Associated Press bringing the flavor and details of the games to you:

___

JOKING ABOUT THE WEATHER

The emcee in Olympic Stadium is cracking jokes about the weather: "We need the rain! It wouldn't be the London Olympics without rain!"

? Cassandra Vinograd ? Twitter http://twitter.com/cassvinograd

___

IT'S RAINING!

It just had to happen. It's started to rain inside the Olympic Stadium

"Don't worry! Don't worry! It's only a little flat rain," said an organizer through a megaphone as a group of performers dressed as milk maids started to pick up the pace on the way inside.

? Jon Krawczynski ? Twitter http://twitter.com/APkrawczynski

___

LIKE A FARMYARD

The animals have just come into the stadium. That is 70 sheep, 12 horses, 10 chickens and nine geese. One of those horses is a shire horse. The music is starting to build and there are camera flashes all around the stadium. What will the animals make of that?

? Fergus Bell ? Twitter http://twitter.com/fergb

__

MANY COLORS

They've come from all over for these games and this opening ceremony. Fans seen filing into Olympic Stadium wearing the colors of Canada, Mexico, Poland, Italy, Russia, Germany, Brazil and seemingly all points in between.

That includes the most well-represented nation, of course: Team GB.

? Jon Krawczynski ? Twitter http://www.twitter.com/APkrawczynski

___

NO RAIN - YET

There's been so much talk about the British weather and if rain would spoil the opening ceremony. Well, it's still anyone's guess.

AP's John Krawczynski, outside the main stadium in Olympic Park, says: "It's cool with a light breeze and no rain. But it does feel as though it could rain at any moment."

? Jon Krawczynski ? Twitter http://twitter.com/APkrawczynski

__

ELECTRIC ATMOSPHERE

The atmosphere is absolutely electric. We have already had a few attempts at doing the wave. Crew members in white coveralls and painter hats are parading these clouds around the stadium. Music up. Cheers up. scenes playing on the screens of past Olympians and young kids.

? Danica Kirka ? Twitter http://twitter.com/danicakirka

___

CEREMONY SECURITY

Security lines, or lack thereof, are moving easily at the Olympic Park. It does feel a bit like stumbling onto a military base ? fresh-faced young soldiers in uniform are everywhere, and every single X-ray machine and scanner is manned by soldiers rather than other organizing committee staff.

So many soldiers that some are just standing around, waiting for a crushof spectators that has not yet materialized.

? Cassandra Vinograd ? Twitter http://twitter.com/cassvinograd

___

PRESIDENTIAL FRIENDS

Maya Moore has spent so much time with the Obama family, she could be an honorary member.

She was the only female basketball player invited to play with the President in a game to celebrate his 49th birthday in 2010. She also did a soon to be released public service announcement with Michelle Obama in May supporting the "Let's Move!" campaign.

The two shared a hug and chatted for a few minutes Friday morning after the first lady opened her stint as leader of the U.S. Olympics delegation attending a breakfast with Olympians.

"That was a little treat," Moore says. "Any time I can see the president or first lady it's such a treat. She's someone who you can relate to because she's very active and enjoys sports. We know that whole family loves basketball."

? Doug Feinberg ? Twitter http://www.twitter.com/dougfeinberg

___

EXCITED

Less than an hour before showtime and excited visitors are filing into Olympic Stadium.

Tarik Lacene, a Canadian who lives in London, scored tickets to the opening ceremony.

"It's a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity," Lacene says. "It's amazing to think that over 1 billion people will be watching it on TV and we're actually here."

? Jon Krawczynski ? Twitter http://www.twitter.com/APkrawczynski

___

THE ANTICIPATION

From AP's Fergus Bell in place and awaiting the opening ceremony:

"A Mexican wave just started. The crowd are getting fired up. The scene is set on the stage in front of me depicting a rural idyll. There are tractors and a water wheel. There is a small cottage in the middle with two smoking chimneys. I have seen similar scenes in the English countryside but this looks a little cleaner, a little more fairytale.

? Fergus Bell ? Twitter http://twitter.com/fergb

___

GETTING THERE

AP's Cassandra Vinograd reports from the streets ? well, the railway tracks ? of London:

This reporter was in a bit of a panic ? left work late and wondered how she would ever get through the crowds to board a train to Olympic Park.

But tubes were not crowded and St. Pancras International, where you catch the high speed Javelin train, is a breeze. There were no lines whatsoever to get on the Javelin ? despite crowd-flow measures (barricades, like what airports use for long check-in lines). The line spaces were all empty.

The only glitch was a few travelers grumbling over a broken ticket machine, leaving only one working dispenser on the Javelin platform.

But no worries in the end. With so few jostling for space, everyone got a ticket in time.

?Cassandra Vinograd ? Twitter http://twitter.com/cassvinograd

___

NO KNOCKOFFS

Egypt's Olympic team won't be wearing knockoffs after all at the London Games.

Nike announced Friday it was donating its gear to the Egyptian athletes. This after the country's committee chairman said they'd turned to a Chinese distributor because the real thing was just too expensive.

Not so during the opening ceremony, though. Nike's shipment isn't due to arrive in London until Saturday.

WHITE RIBBONS

The widow of Alexander Litvinenko, the exiled former Russian agent who died from a mysterious case of radiation poisoning, is calling on Londoners to protest Russian President Vladimir Putin's visit to the Olympics.

Litvinenko issued a statement shortly before his 2006 death, accusing Putin of ordering him to be poisoned. He had been living in London since fleeing Russia in 2000. In a book written in exile, he accused Russia's main security agency, for which he once worked, of staging the 1999 apartment building bombings that were blamed on Chechen rebels and used as a justification for starting the second Chechen war.

British-Russian relations suffered a serious setback in 2007 after Russia refused to extradite the man that Britain named as the main suspect in Litvinenko's death.

Marina Litvinenko on Friday issued a statement saying "Mr. Putin's agents killed my husband" and called on Londoners wo wear white ribbons, the emblem of the Russian opposition, to proest Putin's visit Aug. 2 that is to include watching the judo.

? Jim Heintz ? Twitter http://twitter.com/jeheintz

___

WHERE TO WATCH?

AP's Jenna Fryer reports from the streets of London:

Is there no such thing as a sports bar here?

Looking for a pub where I can hang with the locals and watch the opening ceremony is proving to be more challenging than I expected.

Since arriving, I've noticed that not that many pubs have televisions, so I've had to ask around for recommendations for the ceremonies. The first two I called ? one of which was the favorite watering hole of the late Amy Winehouse ? said they had no plans to show the ceremonies. "Tonight's just a regular pub night," I was told.

It seemed strange to see bars without TV's, but to not have such a big event blaring from every television in the country tonight is just bizarre.

PREPPED FOR HISTORY

Double-amputee runner Oscar Pistorius has arrived in London for his historic debut at the Olympics and says he's feeling "a mixture of pride, happiness and anticipation" at the end of his long journey to compete at the highest level in able-bodied competition.

Pistorius made the short flight across from his training camp in northern Italy and says he's "really excited" to attend the opening ceremony.

The South African has been battling for four years to reach the 2012 games. He was cleared to compete against able-bodied competitors on his carbon fiber blades in 2008, ran two qualifying times for London in the last 12 months, but missed out on the crucial third under his country's strict qualifying criteria.

But the selectors had a last-minute change of heart weeks before the games and picked him for the individual 400 meters as well as the 4x400 relay.

In an email to the AP, Pistorius says: "This feels like a long time coming and I am ready! This is going to be, I hope, an incredible few weeks of my life."

His first run at the Olympics will be in the 400 heats on Aug. 4. It'll be history.

FOOD WITH NO NAME

Food choices are simple at the ExCel arena, the giant convention center hosting seven Olympic disciplines. Because McDonald's has exclusive rights to sell branded products, the dozen concessions at the venue are prohibited from using a specific name.

So, here's what's on offer on large signs:

?"Traditional Roast."

?"Sandwich."

?"Bagel"

?"Italian" or "Chinese."

? "Baked Potato" ? which, by the way, is often called a "jacket potato" in these parts.

? Stephen Wade ? Twitter http://twitter.com/StephenWadeAP

___

KEEP DREAM-ING

You get the sense that LeBron James doesn't want to hear another word about it.

"Who's better ? 1992 or 2012?" That's been a talking point for weeks, the comparison between the 1992 Dream Team that went to Barcelona and this year's Olympic team.

"It's never going to happen," James said Friday of a hypothetical game between the two teams. "It doesn't matter how much conversation that we have about this team and the '92 Dream Team. It's never going to be played. Father Time is not going to allow that to happen. So it doesn't even matter."

That wasn't his way of downplaying expectations about what to expect from the U.S. squad in London.

Quite the contrary.

James, who won the NBA MVP award, the NBA Finals MVP award and led the Miami Heat to the title this past season, is fully expecting to add Olympic gold to his unbelievable year.

"I know one thing," James said. "I know we have a great team. And if we play as a team, like we're capable of doing, we can be one of the best teams ever assembled.

Africa: In Zimbabwe Land Takeover, a Golden Lining ? Miami ...

Posted on by The Victoria Law Group

Crazy Bob Mugabe is one of the oldest and longest serving ?dictators? in Africa.? Due to some unintended consequences of some of his early decisions, some neighboring countries are the beneficiaries of the Zimbabwe farmers? exodus from their homeland.? For example, when Roger Boka started his auction business in the 1990s, this city?s tobacco trading floors were hushed places, save the mellifluous patter of the auctioneer. A handful of white farmers, each selling hundreds of bales of tobacco, arrived in sport utility vehicles, checking into the city?s best hotels while waiting for their big checks to be cut.? Bob Mugabe is still crazy, but things are changing in Africa.

U.S. campaign: Before the convention, there's the commute

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - So, where are you staying?

That could be the universal greeting at the Republican National Convention next month, when about 50,000 people arrive in Tampa, Florida, to celebrate Mitt Romney's nomination as his party's presidential nominee.

With 36 hotels needed to house the 2,286 convention delegates and thousands of guests, corporate sponsors and media, convention organizers were forced to look far and, in some cases, very wide for accommodations within driving distance of the city on central Florida's Gulf Coast.

Since rooming assignments were announced this spring, there's been a rumble of discontent among party members, who typically shell out thousands of dollars to attend their party's presidential nominating jamboree. Some Republicans are in disbelief over how much time they will have to spend on a bus.

Among the people confronting an hour-long ride to reach the Tampa Bay Times Forum are the 200 Republicans in the Florida delegation ? no home-field advantage for this year's host.

"They thought that putting us out in a suburb of Anchorage would be appropriate," said Sidney Dinerstein, chairman of the Palm Beach County Republicans.

While closer than Alaska, the Florida delegation will be 32 miles away from the action, staying at the Innisbrook Resort in Palm Harbor, a long drive west of downtown Tampa.

Hotel assignments are symbolic, for some, of a state's importance to the national party and are second only in status to a delegation's placement on the convention floor.

This year, two states with particularly desirable digs are Michigan and Massachusetts, Romney's birthplace and current home. Delegates from both are staying steps from the Forum.

Wisconsin, home to Republican National Committee boss Reince Priebus, also landed a plum hotel assignment.

?TREATED LIKE PURE GOLD'

For the Floridians, their far-off lodgings are not accidental. Members of the delegation believe that they've been put in the doghouse for moving up the date of their presidential primary to January 31.

Convention officials say they don't wield housing assignments as a form of punishment. The convention's first priority was making sure state delegations weren't divided into multiple hotels, said convention spokesman James Davis.

"Everyone in Florida who is coming to the convention will be treated like pure gold," Priebus told reporters during a recent visit to Tampa Bay.

Joining Florida at the Innisbrook will be South Carolina, another state which altered the date of its primary to the displeasure of the national party.

"The penalty is what it is," said Katon Dawson, a former South Carolina Republican party chairman. "We would hitch a ride, if we had to, to get to the arena."

Dawson is taking his state's exile in stride.

"Did they mention it's a five-star resort? With four golf courses?" he said of those who are dismayed by the distance.

Also worth mentioning: the Innisbrook is owned by Sheila Johnson, a Democratic donor and co-founder of Black Entertainment Television. Hosting the delegates isn't Johnson's first display of bipartisanship: she endorsed Virginia Republican Bob McDonnell for governor in 2009.

?LOGISTICAL NIGHTMARE'

With the modern convention choreographed down to the last piece of confetti, the wrangling over room assignments has become a new way for party big wheels to bring back some old-fashioned political infighting.

When the Texas delegation learned that it would be housed in the Saddlebrook Resort, 30 miles away from the convention, state party chairman Steve Munisteri called it "demoralizing."

"We're trying to figure out why we're being punished," he told the Washington Times.

Munisteri now says that his umbrage was a negotiating tactic in an attempt to force an upgrade. It failed.

Over 700 people will travel with the Texas delegation, a group that has grown accustomed to a starring role with a Texan on the national ticket at six of the last eight Republican conventions.

Plus, Munisteri said, Texas understands that it doesn't need any special treatment from the national party to vote for Romney? a Democrat hasn't won the state since 1976.

Getting hundreds of Texans back and forth will be a "logistical nightmare," Munisteri said, but he is already looking forward to the trip back to the hotel.

"We're sharing the Saddlebrook with the Louisiana delegation," Munisteri said, "so those bars going to be pretty wild. Come by for a bourbon."

Autopsy: Arsonist killed self in court with cyanide

Michael Marin could be seen putting something in his mouth after he was found guilty in an Arizona courtroom, NBC's Thomas Roberts reported for TODAY earlier this month.

By M. Alex Johnson, NBC News

An autopsy report confirmed Friday that Michael Marin, the former Wall Street trader who collapsed and died in court minutes after he was convicted of arson last month, committed suicide by taking cyanide.

M. Alex Johnson is a reporter for NBC News. Follow him on Twitter and Facebook.

Authorities immediately suspected that Marin, 53, killed himself June 28 in Maricopa County Superior Court in Phoenix by swallowing a homemade cyanide pill.

Marin had just been convicted of burning down his mansion in 2009 when he went into convulsions at the defendant's table. He was declared dead at the scene.

?

The autopsy confirmed that Marin died of cyanide poisoning, The Associated Press reported.

Marin was often described as a larger-than-life figure. He made a fortune on Wall Street, flew his own planes, held a law degree from Yale University and climbed Mount Everest.

But he had retired from finance several years ago and?was no longer able to keep up with?his $17,250-a-month mortgage payments, prosecutors said. So he burned down his home, on which he owed?$2.3 million, and made headlines by escaping from a second-floor window in scuba gear.

Stay informed with the latest headlines; sign up for our newsletter

After Marin's death, police?found a canister of cyanide in his?car, along with a note to his son saying his will was up to date and in place.

James Dearing, medical director at John C. Lincoln Medical Centers in Phoenix, said cyanide poisoning was an especially unpleasant but highly effective way to kill oneself.

"It's a very fast-acting chemical that comes in gas or crystal form," Dearing told NBC station KPNX of Phoenix. "What this chemical does is it prevents oxygen from leaving the blood and going into the cells, so the cells will die."

Public Speaking Competition : Mr. Rees' Class Blog

Posted by?Mr. Rees?on?Friday, July 27th 2012?????

This term, there is a public speaking competition that will be run across the whole school. Every student is required to write and present a speech (Year 5: 3-4 minutes).?Three students will be chosen from each class to progress to the next level. Students who progress to the higher levels will also be required to do an impromptu speech.

You may choose to do a topic from ?Set Topics? ?or ?Your Choice?

Class Speech Due:?Monday 6th August

Set Topics

  • The amazing brain
  • An Olympic dream
  • Alternative Energy
  • In the news
  • Violence in video games
  • Sport is for everyone
  • Money can?t buy you everything

Your Choice?

When thinking about a topic of your own choice, you should ask yourself the following questions.

  • What are you really interested in?
  • What are you excited about?
  • What do you find easy that others find a bit harder?
  • What do you feel strongly about?

Public Speaking Tips

  • Know about the world. Read the newspaper which has information about the world in which you live in. This is important for prepared speeches, as well as impromptus.
  • When you are thinking about your topic, analyse the ideas in your topic. Answer the question in terms of why it is important to you, Australia and the world.
  • In your answer explain why the world should care about the problem. Make what you know about the world explicit.
  • When writing out a speech, lay out a clear structure. A speech needs to have a logical sequence. The structure should go something like this:
    • - explain the problem at the outset
    • - develop a theme
    • - answer the question from your speech; the answer needs to be a solid, intelligent answer. This is important for prepared speeches, as well as impromptus.
  • In a speech, lists are not good. If you do decide to use a few examples, you need to think about what qualities do the things on your list share. Start with explaining the qualities first and then move onto the list. Think carefully about what qualities rise above each example. Your speech needs to have a backbone and all of your examples should follow that. Generally speaking a speech with fewer examples that are explained better will be the one that has a chance of winning.
  • A better speech (prepared or impromptu) is one that focuses on one main idea and sticks to that idea. You need to isolate a problem and come up with one way of solving that problem.
  • When preparing for an impromptu, you need to make sure that you maintain a consistent theme throughout the impromptu and not just say a whole lot of things as a list. Set up a structure in your impromptu- the problem, then the solution, followed by the outcome. Explain why your topic is important.
  • One of the most important things about both prepared speeches and impromptus is that you should not dress it up, it is not a drama or a show; it is the content that matters. It is not a dramatic monologue, just say the speech in a convincing manner. Use your words to persuade the audience. It shouldn?t be said as if it is a story.
  • Don?t be afraid to be strong and persuasive in your speech.

Some Useful Hints for Impromptu

  • You will have 5 minutes to brainstorm the topic. You will be given a piece of paper and a pencil to jot down your ideas.
  • Brainstorm the topic.
  • Choose one idea from this to develop further.
  • The speech should have a clear message.

Novel therapy may prevent damage to the retina in diabetic eye diseases

ScienceDaily (July 27, 2012) ? Researchers at the University of Michigan Kellogg Eye Center have identified a compound that could interrupt the chain of events that cause damage to the retina in diabetic retinopathy. The finding is significant because it could lead to a novel therapy that targets two mechanisms at the root of the disease: inflammation and the weakening of the blood barrier that protects the retina.

To date, treatments for diabetic retinopathy, the leading cause of blindness among working-age Americans, have been aimed largely at one of those mechanisms.

In diabetic retinopathy, damage to the retina results, in part, from the activity of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), a protein that weakens the protective blood-retinal barrier. Recent drugs targeting VEGF have exhibited good response for nearly half of the patients with diabetic retinopathy. But researchers believe that there is also an inflammatory component that may contribute to the disease process.

The study, published in the Biochemical Journal, June 2012 [epub ahead of print] identifies a specific protein common to both pathways as an important target in regulating the disease process in which blood vessels become leaky, and provides a drug that may be developed into a therapeutic intervention for patients in which anti-VEGF treatment alone is not sufficient.

"In diabetic retinopathy and a host of other retinal diseases, increases in VEGF and inflammatory factors -- some of the same factors that contribute to the response to an infection -- cause blood vessels in the eye to leak which, in turn, results in a buildup of fluid in the neural tissue of the retina," says David A. Antonetti, Ph.D., Professor, Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences and Molecular and Integrative Physiology, who has also been awarded a Jules and Doris Stein Professorship from Research to Prevent Blindness. "This insidious form of modified inflammation can eventually lead to blindness."

The compound targets atypical protein kinase C (aPKC), required for VEGF to make blood vessels leak. Moreover, Antonetti's laboratory has demonstrated that the compound is effective at blocking damage from tumor necrosis factor also elevated in diabetic retinopathy that comprises part of the inflammation. Benefits of this compound could extend to therapies for uveitis, or changes to the brain blood vessels in the presence of brain tumors or stroke.

"This is a great leap forward," says Antonetti. "We've identified an important target in regulating blood vessel leakage in the eye and we have a therapy that works in animal models. Our research is in the early stages of development. We still have a long way to go to demonstrate effectiveness of this compound in humans to create a new therapy but the results are very promising."

Estate Planning for the Military Family - Williamsburg Trusts & Estates

Members of the armed forces about to be deployed have a lot on their minds, but one thing on the checklist needs to be making sure their legal and financial affairs are in order.? With a little planning, servicemen and women deployed overseas can serve their country with the peace of mind that comes from knowing that their family and their future security are provided for.

For too many of us, the necessities of estate planning are easy to forestall. However, for a military family, the exigencies of the present are too great to ignore. Proper planning is an immediate concern.

How can military families properly plan? A recent Forbes article titled ?Make a Legal and Financial To-Do List Before Military Deployment? sheds some practical light.

Essentially, military plans always are based on battlefield ?contingencies.? Whether over there or on the home front, changes on the ?battlefield? are hard to predict. For example, for a deploying soldier (sailor, airman, marine or coast guardsman), have you secured enough life insurance to provide for your family? If yes, does your life insurance specifically carve out war, war-risk, service casualties, and the like as exclusions? Regardless, make sure you maximize any government-offered life insurance, as it does not exclude such risks.

Ultimately, do not ignore making proper estate plans as well. Be sure to coordinate your estate planning with the beneficiary designations on your life insurance and other assets. While a Legal Assistance Officer in your local Judge Advocate General?s Office can assist, most state bar associations have attorneys who will assist you at little, if any, financial cost.

Gun control group calls on Obama, Romney to lead

WASHINGTON (AP) ? A prominent gun control group is calling on President Barack Obama and Republican challenger Mitt Romney to lead a search for solutions to gun violence.

The Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence says both candidates owe voters concrete plans to reduce violence after the mass shooting in a Colorado movie theater that killed 12 people and injured dozens more.

The group's president, Dan Gross, says Obama's rhetoric about gun control hasn't been met with action. He says it's shameful for political leaders to play politics with the issue when lives could be saved.

Obama has embraced some additional gun restrictions, but has been tepid about irking gun-rights activists by making a robust push for them. Romney says changing the nation's laws won't prevent gun-related tragedies.

(AP) ? President Barack Obama will not push for stricter gun laws this election year, the White House said Thursday, one day after his impassioned remarks about the need to keep assault weapons off the streets suggested he may plunge into that political fight and challenge Congress to act.

Instead, Obama's stand on the government's role ended up right where it was after the mass shooting in Colorado last week: Enforce existing law better.

That is same view held by his Republican opponent, Mitt Romney, as both reach for broader and more politically appealing ways to keep guns away from killers.

Obama still wants Congress to reinstitute a federal ban on military-style assault weapons that lapsed years ago, his spokesman Jay Carney said. But the president is not and has not been pushing for that ban, a nod to the politics of gun control.

There is no interest among many lawmakers of both parties to take on the divisive matter. Especially not with an election in just over 100 days.

Sealing the matter, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid said Thursday the Senate's schedule is too packed to even have a debate on gun control.

Asked if the Senate might debate the issue next year, Reid said, "Nice try."

Public opinion has shifted away from tighter gun control. Twenty years ago, polls showed that a substantial majority supported stricter limits on guns. Now Americans appear evenly divided. Nearly every statement on the matter from Romney and Obama includes reminders that they stand by the Second Amendment.

From the White House, Carney said: "There are things that we can do short of legislation and short of gun laws."

The lack of legislation reflects that reality, too: Police say laws and background checks are often futile in keeping someone with horrifying intent from executing a massacre. Authorities say the suspect in the Aurora, Colo., shootings broke no laws when he purchased the guns he is accused of using, and he passed the required background checks.

Obama and his team "gain nothing politically, and they just don't have the horsepower to pass anything," said William Vizzard, professor emeritus of criminal justice at California State University, Sacramento, and an author on gun control politics. "And then the problem is trying to craft a law that would really do something."

Yet at least one prominent gun control group sought Thursday to pressure Obama and Romney to offer voters concrete plans. The group's president, Dan Gross, said words alone were not enough in a nation in which 32 people are killed by guns each day. He specifically challenged Obama to move beyond the rhetoric.

"The president said very similar things in his last campaign," said Gross, head of the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence. "A speech is not a plan. An endorsement of a measure is not a solution."

It was Obama who stirred the issue in speaking Wednesday night to the National Urban League, a civil rights organization whose mission is to help black Americans secure economic opportunity and power.

In his most extensive remarks on guns since the Colorado shooting left 12 dead and dozens wounded, Obama said steps to reduce violence have been opposed by Congress and "we should leave no stone unturned" in the national imperative of keeping young people safe.

And he got specific on assault-style weapons. "A lot of gun owners would agree that AK-47s belong in the hands of soldiers, not in the hands of criminals ? that they belong on the battlefield of war, not on the streets of our cities," he said.

Obama's message was comprehensive, but he ultimately did not promise anything specific. He spoke of community policing strategies and mental health centers, or programs that steer people away into safe activities instead of gang violence, of ensuring that parents and teachers step in to fill a hole in a child's heart "that government alone cannot fill."

Romney, in an interview Thursday with CNN, said new laws won't help. He cited the case of Timothy McVeigh, who was convicted and put to death for the 1995 bombing of a federal building in Oklahoma City, which killed 168 people. McVeigh used fertilizer in constructing his bomb.

"I think that the effort to continue to look for some law to somehow make violence go away is missing the point," Romney said. "The real point has to relate to individuals that are deranged and distressed, and to find them and help them and to keep them from carrying out terrible acts."

The ban on assault weapons that became law in 1994, during President Bill Clinton's first term, contributed to the Democrats' loss of Congress that year. It expired during George W. Bush's presidency in 2004.

The ban would have prevented the Colorado shooting suspect, James Holmes, from legally buying one of the four firearms police found on him and in his car, an assault rifle. It also would have prevented him from buying new high-capacity ammunition magazines.

Vizzard, the gun control scholar, said there are legislative ways to reduce gun violence, particularly over a longer term of 20 to 30 years. But with an estimated 300 million guns in the United States, he said, Obama is right that "the things that have the most impact are cultural" and that shape the behavior of young people.

Obama once got into his own firestorm during the 2008 presidential race by saying some bitter small-town residents cling to guns and religion for solace. This time, Vizzard said, the president will not give any material to critics who believe he is out to strip their gun rights.

"He's a cagey guy," Vizzard said. "He's just not going to do it."
