USF Bulls add basketball assistant with NBA experience

TAMPA - The remaking of the University of South Florida men's basketball staff began Wednesday with the hiring of assistant coach Mike Wells, who spent the past two years at George Mason but also worked for 17 years in the NBA.

Bulls coach Stan Heath described Wells as ?maybe a little bit out of the box hire? but said the NBA experience ?will help our team become more innovative and creative offensively and defensively.?

Andy Hipsher recently left USF to become associate head coach at Texas-Pan American, where his father, Dan, is the head coach. Meanwhile, Heath did not retain assistant coach Eric Skeeters or director of basketball operations Reggie Hanson, leaving him with two more full-time openings to fill.

In the NBA, Wells worked with the Houston Rockets, San Antonio Spurs, Los Angeles Lakers and Washington Wizards. He has experience under head coaches Rudy Tomjanovich, Gregg Popovich and Larry Brown.
